In 2015, Allure published an investigation into the number of tanning beds present on college campuses. Back then, nearly half of America’s top 125 colleges and universities had tanning beds on campus or in off-campus housing—many of which students could pay for using their meal cards.

Since that story ran, most of those salons have closed their doors. Now, only about 3 percent of teens and young adults use tanning beds, compared to 8.6 percent about a decade ago. So great news, right? Problem (almost) solved? Unfortunately, no.

Despite increased education around the health- and aesthetic-related risks of UV exposure, tanning culture is on the rise. In 2026, though, it’s focused on “laying out” in the actual sun rather than sliding into a tanning bed. A recent survey by the American Academy of Dermatology found that getting a tan was important to 25% of Gen Z participants, regardless of future impact on their skin. Creators on social media are sharing their “GRWM to lay out” routines. And young people are using apps to track the UV Index—not so they can avoid the sun during peak hours, but so they can optimize the most intense rays for the fastest tan.
