There are 4 sculptures suspended by steel mesh grips, a tool for pulling electrical and internet cables through piping. Each assemblage is suspended through the grip strength. The assemblages are studio elements I’ve been collecting for 15 plus years, decorative, kitchen, and industrial. There are elements from various travels- Austin, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Skowhegan, New York.

Oy divas, we got a new show announcement innit?

Below Grand presents Frictions, a group exhibition curated by Sarah Tortora featuring works by Dana DeGiulio, Shadi Harouni, Maximiliano Rosiles, Jonathan Herrera Soto, and Jeff Williams. The exhibition considers how structures of spatial and social logic (borders, architectural planes, extraction sites, and perspectival conventions), are reshaped through contact, pressure, improvisation, and repetition. Frictions treats material as a record of unresolved time and demonstrates how culturally inherited systems become adapted after historical claims toward neutrality, progress, or infallibility have faltered.

Williams’s abstract aluminum sculptures incorporating cookware register industrial ore as a sediment of astrophysical history, bringing the cosmic and domestic into direct contact. Herrera Soto’s print-based paper airplane drawings, partly influenced by the Zapatista Air Force*, insist on pressure, erosion, and miscommunication as conditions of image-making. Harouni’s film I Long for a Game of Football, set in a black pumice quarry in Kurdistan, features a group of quarrymen and the artist interacting in a landscape shaped by historical extraction. DeGiulio’s daily oil paintings treat repetition and attention as durational imprints that vary from abstraction to representation, and Rosiles’s collapsing nail grids yield colonial spatial logics to gravity and improvisation, understanding space as a negotiated rather than fixed condition. Frictions, situated beside a restaurant supply store, frames the everyday as a site where endurance, adaptation, spirit, and covert play can shape new material and social futures.

“Electro Slag” is an exhibition of recent sculpture centered on geological and ecological phenomena found in Central Texas. Primarily cast and welded in aluminum, Williams’ sculptures continue an ongoing exploration of material evidence left by ecological processes. These pieces consist of impressions captured from two proximate sites. First, the destructive soil disturbances created by feral hogs—an invasive hybrid species who dig up along the river searching for food. Second, an exposed cave, whose formations quietly record shifts in precipitation across millennia. Operating at vastly different temporal scales, these two sites function as parallel indices of time and place – one rapidly altered by the behavior of a recently developed species, the other slowly inscribed through patient geological accumulation.

In Williams’ sculptures, the merging of animal and mineral is captured with hand cast elements, recycled slag, industrial extrusions, and human made fossils. Subjecting his materials to transformations in the studio, Williams uses a range of processes: crushing, crumpling, chopping, fusing, folding, pulling, etc. The sculptures are vertically oriented, extending down from the ceiling on mesh grips or stretching up from the floor on melted beams. With his sculptures, Williams plays with shifts in perception of materials and forms, questioning the nature of what we are experiencing.
