🙌 Sending out a massive big up to our co-founder and owner @misspatchin @vprecords ahead of #InternationalWomensDay2026 this Sunday 8th March.

In the late 1950s, Patricia Chin, aka Miss Pat, abandoned a career in nursing and, with her husband Vincent ‘Randy’ Chin, started selling old jukebox records out of a grocery store. Their business moved to downtown Kingston and would grow into Randy’s Record Mart, one of Jamaica’s most famous record stores, located at 17 North Parade. Upstairs, they set up Studio 17 and worked with some of reggae’s biggest stars, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee ’Scratch’ Perry, Alton Ellis and John Holt to name but a few.

In the late seventies, the couple planted new roots in the United States and established VP Records, today the world’s largest independent reggae labels and distributor of Caribbean music. As a female pioneer in a male-dominated industry, Miss Pat has created an incredible legacy and played a major part in spreading the music of Jamaica globally 🌍

Congo Ashanti is the third LP from the iconic reggae group that came to the world’s attention via Lee Scratch Perry’s masterpiece Heart Of The Congos in 1977. After establishing a mystique and unique cache through their association with Perry, the group, featuring Cedric Myton, Watty Burnett, and Roy Johnson, struck out on its own to produce Image Of Africa and Congo Ashanti, both released in 1979. Each album is remembered for a distinct studio sound, more mainstream than Scratch’s hazy experiments and in line with late 70s reggae golden studio era. Standout tracks include “Youth Man,” “Days Chasing Days,” “Hail The World Of Jah,” and “Thief Is In The Vineyard.”
.
Featuring the cream of the crop of reggae studio musicians of the 1970s, the album also notably features guitarist Ernest Ranglin on “Hail The World Of Jah.” Other celebrated players are Sly Dunbar (of the dynamic duo Sly & Robbie) and tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook. The album was recorded at Harry J and Aquarius and mixed at Dynamic Sounds by Geoffrey Chung.

This reissue features stunningly remastered audio, plus the original 1979 cover and inner sleeve with the acclaimed photographs of French rock photographer Antoine Giacomoni. He shot some of the most artful photos of the group during his time in Jamaica as these works were recorded 🇯🇲

🎹 Originally released in 1978, ‘In Cold Blood’ showcases the Keyboard King with a killer selection of riddims provided by the Aggrovators. ‘In Cold Blood’ captures the Bunny Lee supreme team at the height of their revolutionary powers, all tracks feature Sly & Robbie, Tommy McCook, and Bobby Ellis superbly blending with Jackie Mittoo and Winston Wright’s mighty organ workouts. Mittoo’s contribution to reggae music is inestimable, both as a musician and arranger; he created innumerable bass lines, melodies and arrangements that have driven the music for decades. The album features the hits ‘Sky Jack King’ and ‘Earthquake’, a long-unavailable classic set produced by @bunnystrikerlee and mixed by King Tubby. Newly remastered with liner notes and rare images.

🎚️ From the joyful ska of Lord Creator’s independence anthem “Independent Jamaica”, Chapter One runs the true course of Jamaican music in the 1960s with a virtual who’s who of reggae music, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals, The Skatalites, John Holt, Alton Ellis and many more. Originally released only on CD in 2008 to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Randy’s Records, this collection of rare recordings has now finally been made available on vinyl for the very first time, complete with extensive sleeve notes by Blood & Fire’s Steve Barrow plus inner sleeves featuring rare photos.
