ICYM: The BIPOC Critics Lab is going bi-coastal!

Following three successful years of the program, we're honored to partner with The Public Theater to continue Solís’ commitment to creating an educational space for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) writers in the realm of cultural criticism. Partnering with the renowned Old Globe across the country will allow the opportunity for even more individuals to be impacted by this program’s ability to jumpstart their careers in arts journalism.

On Wednesday, we joined hundreds of artists, cultural leaders, arts workers, youth, and advocates at City Hall to urge the Mayor annd City Council to restore arts and culture funding in San Diego's proposed FY27 budget.

When we stand together we send a clear message to City Council: San Diego’s arts and culture community matters. This work matters. The communities we serve matter. We cannot allow them to be treated as expendable.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up, spoke out, and continues to advocate for the future of arts and culture in San Diego.

The council is scheduled to debate that proposal June 5 and then possibly adopt a final budget June 9.

Our advocacy is making progress, but we must keep the pressure on. We need a strong turnout. Please join us, and please encourage your friends, colleagues, and allies who support the arts to come as well.

City of San Diego funding is critical to some of The Old Globe’s most impactful work. It helps sustain programs that extend our mission beyond the stage: arts education for thousands of students, programming for military members and veterans, and performances and workshops in libraries, community centers, Title I schools, shelters, and neighborhoods across every City Council district.
