Huge publishing success, Madame Chrysanthème participated in the interest in France for the Far East and Japan in particular.

The novel, inspired by the author's experience, tells the story of the marriage of a young officer of the French Navy with a Japanese woman in Nagasaki.This was a common practice, lasting only the time of the stay, and the girl would be able then to marry with a Japanese man.

Inspired by the words of Loti, Chrysanthemum questions the Western gaze depicting Asian Women in modern popular culture and its deep roots. Both flower of death and life in the West and the East, Chrysanthemum highlights the difference between perception, and its consequences on human emotions, painting beauty as a curse. "
