In my neuropsychological coaching practice, a recurring challenge is many clients’ resistance to a fundamental principle: personal agency is constant.

Some clients grasp this intuitively; others reject it, particularly when they perceive themselves as controlled by external forces. Paradoxically, this perceived powerlessness often illustrates the principle most clearly.

Even under significant external constraints, individuals retain authorship over their interpretations, responses, and decisions. External factors exert influence only to the extent they are cognitively and emotionally granted it.

Thus, what is experienced as victimhood is not an absence of power, but a misapplication of it—agency directed inward in a self-limiting way.

One of the most cancerous patterns that is creeping around today, and being championed on SM, is the black hole of external validation.

In the seeking of external approval, peoplesabotage their internal compass of self worth, fulfillment, and truth.

What should I do?
What should I want?
What should I think/like/love?
What will people think?

And the irony is, they do all this and still come up empty.

Either they realize they CANNOT actually please others, especially everyone, or they do so and find they now hate themselves.

They have traded their own self worth for the hollow approval of others that so often hate themselves.

End the cycle.
