THIS WEEKEND

Looking forward to seeing you for “Field Set” at artist Kelly Akashi’s (@citizenbong) former home and studio in Altadena, California.

Saturday, May 23 & Sunday, May 24, 2026
2-7PM
Altadena, CA
Free with RSVP at the link in our bio

“Field Set” features a collaboration between Akashi and Phil Peters (@mrphil). Using subterranean microphones, Peters has been continuously recording Akashi’s property since May 2025, capturing the sounds of demolition and nearby rebuilding in the wake of the devastating Eaton Fire. Presented for the first time, the recordings have been arranged into a three-hour durational soundscape played through large-scale subwoofers constructed by Peters.

Each day will conclude with a music performances at 5:45PM by artists with ties to Altadena:
Celia Hollander (@ceellliiiia) on Saturday, May 23 and Paul McCarthy (@paulmccarthyyy), Alex Stevens (@a.s.stagram), and John Wiese (@sad_psychics) on Sunday, May 24

In addition to the sound installation and performances, throughout the day, visitors are encouraged to wander the site to experience new sculptural interventions by Akashi using materials sourced from her property following the fire, as well as her chimney sculpture, “Witness (Altadena),” and community garden.

“Field Set” is commissioned by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) and organized by Christopher Mangum-James, LAND deputy director. This project is made possible with lead support provided by Angeles Art Fund and generous support provided by Ben Weyerhaeuser.

In 2020, Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), in partnership with the Hammer Museum (@hammer_museum), presented a citywide installation of Kahlil Joseph’s BLKNWS® (@blknws), a conceptual news program taking the form of a two-channel installation connected to a newscast that blurs the lines between art, reporting, entrepreneurship, and cultural critique. Kahlil selected sites across LA that were deeply embedded in their neighborhoods.

On long-term view, BLKNWS® is still broadcasting at locations including Hank’s Mini Market (@hanksminimarket), Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen Slauson (@findyourhilltop), and Patria Coffee (@patriacoffee). “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions,” a feature-length film version of the work is now streaming online through Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Fandango, and YouTube.

Go check out the installations and support these local LA Black-owned businesses, and stream the film online!

LAND is pleased to announce the start of a multi-year engagement with Presqu’ile Winery (@presquilewine) resulting in artist residencies, temporary commissions, programming and activations.

Expanding our programmatic offerings to Santa Maria, CA, we look forward to bridging connections between Los Angeles and the Central Coast.

The first of these is a site-specific installation by Cole Sternberg (@colesternberg) titled “along the high embankments.” Sternberg was invited to respond to an empty concrete bunker located on the property of Presqu’ile Winery. The building has been unused by humans for years, yet quietly occupied by other species, nature slowly reclaiming it. Made in collaboration with the elements — soil, wind, sun, and water — the works reveal themselves over time. Just as the landscape is shaped by both natural and human interventions, the installation will continue to evolve, inviting us to consider our individual and collective environmental impact.

Save the date for an opening program on Sunday June 7, 2026 from 1-3PM, featuring family activities, music, and an exhibition walkthrough. More details forthcoming.

“along the high embankments” will be on view June 7-September 20, 2026. Learn more about the project at the link in our bio.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) presents “Field Set,” a new sound installation and series of sculptural interventions using recordings and materials from artist Kelly Akashi’s (@citizenbong) former home and studio in Altadena, California.

Join us in Altadena on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, 2026 from 2-7PM.

“Field Set” features a collaboration between Akashi and Phil Peters (@mrphil). Presented for the first time, these field recordings focus on the debris removal and excavation period and are arranged into a three-hour durational soundscape.

Played through large-scale subwoofers constructed by Peters, the work unfolds across the ground and through low-frequency sound, using the site as a physical surface and a field of resonance. Following the soundscape, each day will conclude with a live musical performance by an artist with ties to the neighborhood. Participating performers will be announced shortly.

In addition to the sound installation, visitors are encouraged to wander the site to experience new sculptures by Akashi using materials sourced from her property following the Eaton Fire, as well as her chimney sculpture, “Witness (Altadena),” and community garden.

“Field Set” is free to attend via the link in our bio. We hope to see you there.

Location and parking instructions will be provided upon RSVP. Please note that “Field Set” is on private property in Altadena and not accessible outside of the project dates.

5 Places is a LAND Journal series where we talk about a handful of places that are significant to artists and collaborators.

LAND Operations Coordinator Astrid Kayembe (@astrid.kayembe) writes about the sights that stood out to her when visiting Lauren Halsey’s (@summaeverythang) “sister dreamer lauren halsey’s architectural ode to tha surge n splurge of south central los angeles” for the first time.

The sculpture park features countless homages to the neighborhood, including depictions of businesses like Sam’s Watermelons.

The colorful signs outside of Sam’s Watermelons add “a touch of whimsy to an otherwise unsuspecting intersection, and a sweet connector to Black Angelenos with Southern roots,” Astrid writes. “There’s magic everywhere you look in South Central. That’s always been my favorite part about it. Seeing this stand depicted moved me to tears.”
