This week is National EMS Week, and we’d like to take a moment to say thank you.

To our staff — our flight crews, pilots, mechanics, communications specialists, and every person behind the scenes — your skill, grit, and heart are what make this mission possible. Lives are saved because of you.

And to our EMS partners across the Pacific Northwest, Intermountain West, and Hawaiʻi — the first responders, ground crews, and hospital teams who work alongside us every day — we are stronger because of you. This work only works when we work together.

This year’s EMS Week theme is “Improving Outcomes, Together” — and that’s not just a tagline for us. It’s how we show up.

*** PATIENT STORY ***

When Sue McCluskey and her partner, Mark, retired to a 20-acre farm on Lopez Island, they knew living in a remote community came with challenges. With ferries as the main connection to the mainland, neighbors encouraged them to consider a Life Flight Network membership for peace of mind. They enrolled, never imagining how quickly it would come into play.

One sunny afternoon, Sue fell from a ladder while painting their farmhouse, suffering a compression fracture to her spine. Mark, working in the garage, heard the fall and rushed to her side. Lopez Island Fire arrived and, given her injuries, determined air transport was the safest and fastest option. “I was very concerned, but I knew she was in good hands,” Mark recalls.

Within minutes, Sue was airborne. “Looking down at the ferry dock from the helicopter was surreal,” she remembers. “If we’d waited for the ferry, it would have taken hours. Instead, I was at PeaceHealth St. Joseph in just 12 minutes.”

Thanks to the swift response, Sue avoided surgery and returned home the next day. Today, she enjoys retirement restoring their farm, gardening, and training their Border Collie, Chase. Both she and Mark remain deeply grateful. “Accidents are just that—no one plans them. I am forever grateful for the care I received. Life Flight Network was there when it mattered most. Ten out of ten!”

This POV footage was captured by staff at @wvmchealth in McMinnville, OR during a recent helicopter operations training hosted by our team — and it gives you an idea of what air medical transport actually looks like from the patient’s point of view.

When a patient needs air transport, there’s no time for hesitation. Training together means we move as one team — from the bedside to the aircraft.

Had to share this adorable photo of long time LFN pilot @brandonlhiller and his daughter. Yesterday was his last day at Life Flight Network after 17 years of service.

We tip our hats to you, sir. Thank you for choosing to spend so much of your one precious life safely transporting our crews and patients. We are eternally grateful.
