This afternoon we went out as a team with Becky Aviles, our long time artist collaborator, looking for materials for Parade the Circle. Today’s trip to Open Threads led us on a journey of community, opportunity, and creative curiosity. What an unexpected gem in the middle of Cleveland! Tucked away on a small one-way street, this creative non-profit offers so much more than just the expected. Here you can find sewing education, job skills development, a space of connection, materials at an affordable price, and a mission of sustainability at its core.

As we waltzed through Open Threads, Becky started pulling out bolt after bolt of fabric in all sorts of vibrant colors. With her smile growing, she explained her vision of costumes and accessories to bring her project to life. She’s planning costumes for Latin Social Dance, Latina Image Leadership Program, and her giant puppets. Resulting in costuming for over 30 participants and only 9 weeks to sew!

El amor es algo que construimos.
En nuestro taller de San Valentín, el listón se convirtió en rosas y la creatividad se transformó en conexión. Nuestra comunidad se reunió alrededor de mesas llenas de color y rollos de listón sedoso, dándoles forma cuidadosamente hasta convertirlos en hermosos ramos.
Momentos como estos están en el corazón de nuestra misión. El año pasado conocimos a un joven que estaba perfeccionando este arte, y lo invitamos a co liderar el taller y compartir su talento con nuestra comunidad. Cuando a las y los jóvenes se les brinda espacio para crear, liderar y compartir sus dones, algo hermoso sucede. La confianza crece. La comunidad se fortalece. El arte se convierte en un lenguaje de amor.
Lo que comenzó como listón floreció en algo más que ramos. Se convirtió en una experiencia de pertenencia y expresión. Ese es el tipo de amor que siempre cultivamos.

Love is something we create.
At our Valentine’s Day workshop, ribbon became roses and creativity became connection. Our comunidad gathered around tables filled with color and rolls of silky ribbons carefully shaping them into beautiful bouquets.
Moments like this are the heart of our mission. Last year we met a young man perfecting this craft. We invited him to co-lead the workshop and share his gift with our community. When young people are given space to create, to lead, and to share their gifts, something beautiful happens. Confidence grows. Community deepens. Art becomes a language of love.
What began as ribbon bloomed into more than bouquets. It became an experience of belonging and expression.That is the kind of love we always cultivate.

Calling all young explorers ages 7-10, help us solve the mystery buried beneath the dirt! 🦕

Participants will step into the role of dinosaur detectives, following clues and examining fossils to solve the mystery of which dinosaur is buried at the model dig site. Working together as a team, they’ll model the work of paleontologists and discover how scientists study evidence of life from long ago.

Get ready to dig, discover, and explore as a paleontologist with the whole family.

Free program and all are welcome!

Our Third Friday Family Art Workshop led by Art Therapy Studios was filled with creativity, connection, and self-expression. 🎨 Participants created unique magnets using jar lids, designing beautiful collages that were inserted into each lid to make personalized keepsakes.

For the past 3 art workshops we have been joined by Ashley B and King and we’re very grateful for their attendance and the dynamic energy they bring to the group. King proudly showcased his artistic talents by creating a flamingo masterpiece that brought smiles to everyone in the room. ¡Viva el arte!

Led by Alice (@abrepasoflamenco) we shared the Dichos that shaped our childhoods and learned about each other’s cultures and experiences. As we gathered different fabrics, explored patterns and designs, each piece reflected a story, memory, or tradition that was meaningful to us. Using those materials, we created our own placemats to hold our Dichos. We created something we can pass down for generations beyond just words.

Registration is still open, so there is still time for you to create your own placemat with us this Thursday May 21st. It is a FREE program, recommended for ages 12+ but the entire family is welcome! Additional activities available for children unable to sew.

The People’s Playlist is Cleveland Public Library's (@clevelandpubliclibrary) new streaming platform! Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center is commissioning eight Latino artists to create 2D visual artworks for our upcoming summer exhibition, Perteneces Aquí / You Belong Here.

Inspired by The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the exhibition will explore themes of belonging, identity, memory, home, and self-discovery through contemporary visual art.

Application Materials are due May 19th
Finished works will be displayed on June 26th at our Big Read Block Party Celebration.

Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center está comisionando a ocho artistas Latinos para crear obras visuales 2D para nuestra próxima exhibición de verano, Perteneces Aquí / You Belong Here.

Inspirada en The House on Mango Street de Sandra Cisneros, la exhibición explorará temas de pertenencia, identidad, memoria, hogar y autodescubrimiento a través del arte visual contemporáneo.

Los materiales de solicitud deben entregarse antes del 19 de mayo.
Las obras finalizadas se exhibirán el 26 de junio en nuestra celebración del Big Read Block Party.
