Jonny was part of an Action in Kalebuka, a small village in the Congo, with one goal in mind:
showing the world that leadership begins with self-confidence, and that self-confidence begins with being seen. In this all-girl school of Lubumbashi, he gave every student the chance to be seen and affirm what they represent collectively: the next generation of leaders.
This is episode 3 of our 15th birthday series. Participants from Actions around the world, telling their stories in their own words.
Happy Birthday Inside Out. 🎂

This Month, at North and South Esk Elementary in New Brunswick, Canada, a group of 50 teenagers was asked to put their emotions into a portrait. For a lot of them, what they feel stays inside. Too private, too hard to say out loud. The portrait gave them a way to express who they are.

Inside Out has always lived in streets. In favelas, on borders, in neighborhoods, where pasting a face onto a wall became something much larger than the paper it was printed on.
But over the years, museums around the world have opened their doors to the Project, too.
The Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2011. Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, 2014. The Watari Museum, Miyagi, 2021. Groninger Museum, Groningen, 2021. Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, 2023. PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, 2023. The American Museum of Natural History, New York, 2024. The National Asian Culture Center, Gwangju, 2024.
Each time, the faces of the community filled rooms that have held art for centuries.
Happy National Museum Day.

And if you find yourself in New York this June, there may be something worth seeing, and being a part of ;)

Happy Mother's Day. 💛
Three years ago, 1,700 Brazilian women came together to give visibility to the invisible labor of motherhood.
Across all five regions of Brazil — through 90 interviews and 17 conversation circles spanning 27 states — they shared what it truly means to be a mother in Brazil today. Beyond celebration and idealization, they revealed the full picture: the emotional, mental, and social realities of motherhood, especially in the wake of the pandemic.
Through the Inside Out Project, these stories were not only told, they were seen.

Inside Out started in 2011 with a simple idea: take a portrait, print it large, and paste it somewhere your community can see it. Since then, 600,000 people in 154 countries have done exactly that. Teachers have brought it into classrooms, students have gotten in front of the camera and decided how they wanted to be seen, and the results have gone up on school walls and yards.
The Project gives students a way to explore what they care about and turn it into something visible. Not a classroom exercise that stays inside the room. Something the whole community walks past.
We want to help you create one of these installations with your students, no matter where you are in the world.
If you are a teacher and want to bring Inside Out to your school, DM us!

Four years ago today, 96 children in the Mbera camp pasted their faces onto the walls of the place they called home: a refugee camp in Mauritania, sitting at the border of Mali, deep in the Sahara.
At the time, 80,000 people lived there, having fled drought and instability. This Action helped bring visibility to the children who were displaced.
This Action happened alongside JR’s Déplacé·e·s project, which began in Ukraine with a five-year-old named Valeriia, then travelled to Rwanda, Mauritania, and beyond.
Interested in bringing visibility to more refugee communities around the world?
We’d love to help you create an Action. DM us!

In 2022, we brought the Inside Out Photobooth to Tehachapi State Prison. When it became time to take portraits, nobody wanted to go first.
Chuck, a staff member, finally volunteered.
What followed was a conversation between Chuck and @jr , about music, about graffiti, about what it means to make things. At some point, JR shared his phrase: “I’m an artist until I find a real job.”
Chuck had a real job. Then he became an artist again.
This is episode 2 of our 15th birthday series. Participants from Actions around the world, telling their stories in their own words.
Happy Birthday Inside Out
108 portraits. One shared call for peace. 🤍
At #Fiumicino’s Terminal 1, the installation “DARING PEACE TOGETHER, FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT HATE” transforms the airport into a space for dialogue and connection, with 108 faces from different cultures, backgrounds and faiths coming together to tell one collective story.
A project rooted in the shared belief that meeting, understanding and recognizing one another is the first step toward peace; a project reflecting our vision, where inclusion meets art and innovation.
Thank you to @unhatefoundation, Comunità di @sant.egidio, @studio_kene and @comunedifiumicino for making this possible!
