“The coincidental overlap of our existence in time & an apple”

@kilihali

Can you guess what we have in common with a sliced apple?🍎

I continue creating not necessarily for reasons that may be found in the external world, but more so somewhere deep within me I truly believe that certain things are better off existing in the real world rather than staying inside my head.

With the mass amount of content nowadays I’m not sure if this will be buried amongst the rest…

However if the algorithm happened to magically find you & somehow managed to catch even a glimpse of your attention, let me know☺️ that’ll make me happy🍎

This was perhaps one of the biggest bitter sweet dilemmas that I truly did not know how to process.

After LA auditions, followed by a grueling Vegas week where we were dancing all day every day, our body and our mind was completely past exhaustion at this point.

And then we were told that there was only one more slot to make it to the top 20 of the #SYTYCD Season 3 cast.

As much as I knew how much work I had put in, auditioning 3 years in a row, quitting my school in Japan & graduating early in the US just to get a work visa so I can be considered on the show, sacrificing EVERYTHING and putting everything into dance, I also knew how talented Twitch was, how perfect he was for the show, and how hungry he also was for that slot.

We had always talked about how amazing it would be for both make it on the show together, and seeing how we had put in for this made it that much harder for us to accept the harsh reality for the both of us.

tWitch & I had originally first met during my first year in te US, while I was attending my college’s talent night, where my friends and I had put a small dancer piece together and invited a couple other dance groups from other schools. I believe there was only about four groups altogether, and it was an extremely tiny event with only about 50 people in the crowd. Crazy to think that this was even before I had met any of the guys from Quest crew or Sickstep.

I couldn’t have been more happier when he was able to make it onto the show the following season, as well as seeing his path grow in his career onto bigger things even after So You Think You Can Dance. It made it all that special when we got to work together after over a decade later of us being in the industry.

I am happy to have been able to share this moment of time in our formative years in our career, and appreciate the path we were both able to carve after the show. Miss you brother, I hope you’re doing well up there✨😌

Let’s take it all the way back to the very very beginning…

Rewinding all the way back to my first year in the U.S. I had just finished my two semester foreign exchange program and this was just a couple days before I was going to go back to Japan for good.

With my hair totally overgrown and totally not dressed Camera ready, at the time I had absolutely no idea about cameras, TV or any production. But I am forever thankful for my friend for dragging me out of bed early in the morning to this casting which at the time none of us had absolutely no idea but eventually became the first season of So You Think You Can Dance.

End of an amazing So You Think You Can Dance era💔🙏 Where to even begin… the TV show that single handedly completely changed the course of my entire life & career. As a 22 year old foreign exchange student from Tokyo, never in my dreams of dreams would I have imagined to have a career in the entertainment industry as a professional dancer.

SYTYCD was still one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through in my life as I had gotten a herniated disk right before auditioning for season 3. But I knew that this was the only chance I had so I had to inject cortisone shots in my spine to temporary numb the pain just so I could make it through the season. (I kept it a secret to the production & public at the time because I didn’t want it to get in the way of the competition whatsoever.)

To every single person that watched the show, supported, picked up the phone to vote every week, followed my journey ever since then I would like to say thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart❤️

I was going to conclude it with one carousel but I think they all deserve separate posts as the show truly changed my entire life☺️ get ready for a nostalgic #SYTYCD flood for the coming week🤣

I was hesitant until the last minute to present any of my drawings for my gallery as I thought presenting different mediums may confuse the guest.

Also if I were to be fully transparent I think because a handful of my sketches didn’t necessarily come from the best emotions or memories, it felt very nervous & uneasy for them to be viewed publicly.

But at the end of the day I was very happy that I was able to showcase them all as well as converse in person about how the pieces came to be.

This piece was originally created for an exhibition at the @magiccastlehollywood of one of the castle’s co-founders, William Walter Larsen Jr. Though the concept of the piece itself had a certain depth I was happy about when it was displayed at the castle, I don’t think it was until this gallery that I was able to assemble & frame it in the way the piece fully deserved.

At first glance it may seem like just pure chaos. But once you look deeper you start seeing the patterns & structure it follows.

Once you reflect it off a cylindrical mirror the distortion collapses.

And once you open your mind up to the potentials outside the confinements of time as we know it, then you start to understand its true form.

I’ve always been mesmerized by optical illusions from a young age, and M.C. Escher’s works were definitely some of my favourites.

This is my way of standing on the shoulders of giants, while making sure to add my own twist to the pot & contributing to the innovation rather than just taking from the inspiration.
