If you’re sad that you missed out on getting one of our artist-designed temporary tattoos at the sharing event at Grow back in February, there’s one more chance to purchase a set (direct from Laura Hopes) and design your own sea themed tattoo as part of ‘You Be You! Working with young people from around the city, The Box has put together a day to celebrate self-expression 😊

Laura Hopes will be representing the ‘Let’s SEA your Tatts’ team at The Box, running a workshop where you will have the opportunity to design and have a temporary tattoo applied! ᝰ✍🏻

🗓️ Sat 11 April
📍The Box, Plymouth
⏱️10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm, drop in and stay as long as you want
🎟️ Free, no booking required

As part of Laura Hopes & LOW PROFILE's Let’s SEA Your Tatts residency, we developed some work-in-progress moving image artworks using fragments of people’s stories about their tattoos, submitted to us during our project. We think of these as ‘visual poems’ ᝰ✍🏻

Our Sea For Yourself residency has been about research and experimentation and we’ve enjoyed testing new ideas for artworks that come out of this project. You can view the three videos by following the link in our bio 🔗

As part of LOW PROFILE & Laura Hopes Let’s SEA Your Tatts residency we invited a group of artists who we know (who all have a close relationship to Plymouth) to design a temporary sea related tattoo for a special souvenir edition ᝰ✍🏻

At our sharing event at Grow, we set up a temporary tattoo parlour and had great fun tattooing people throughout the evening!

We have a few copies of the souvenir edition booklets left which we'll be adding to LOW PROFILE's website shop soon for £5 incl. P&P. All profits are split between the artists! DM us if you want one and we'll send you the shop link when it is ready! 🛒

“You could be standing on Union Street and within 30 seconds be talking about grief.”

In our latest In Conversation from Community Reporter @art.with.j.warby artist @laurahopes reflects on the powerful stories behind Let’s SEA Your Tatts, a project that has gathered nearly 300 sea-inspired tattoos from people connected to Plymouth.

From naval history and migration to deeply personal moments of memory and loss, this feature explores how tattooing reveals Plymouth’s emotional connection to the sea.

Read the full conversation by following the Creative Community link in our bio.

Then come and experience the work in person at @growplymouth on Friday 27 February, 5pm–9pm (free, booking essential): follow the link in our bio.

Let’s SEA Your Tatts is part of Sea for Yourself; a programme led by @plymcultureuk in partnership with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park. The programme development and delivery is supported by @theboxplymouth, @realideas, @artsuniplym, @plymuni , Plymouth City Council and @theatreroyalplymouth. The Beryl Cook image we've selected shows tattooist Doc Price at work in his studio on Union Street. Aged 92, Doc is Britain's oldest working tattooist and has been tattooing the people of Plymouth for over 70 years! Although this painting won’t be on display you can look forward to seeing more than 80 other works. Find out more about Doc’s studio @docprice2007

With thanks to @beryl_cook_official for allowing us to share this image.

THANK YOU to everyone who submitted their tattoos with us, we’re still going through these but estimate that we have had around 215 tattoos and stories shared with us - which is really amazing! ᝰ✍🏻 ❤️

We have now closed submissions - to give us time to prepare for our work in progress event which will take place at GROW in February 2026 - details to follow in the new year ✨🐙

Here are a few final tattoos that have been submitted over the last few weeks. If we haven’t featured your tattoo online yet, fear not! The whole collection of tattoo photos will be available to view at GROW ⚓🧜🏾‍♀️

📸
1, 2 & 3. Roisin told us “I can honestly say, I feel like I haven’t done a single nautical piece in about 10 years, but here are some of mine from the archives!” Roisin Cunningham / Roisin Dubh is a popular tattooist in Plymouth, who specialises in dotwork illustration - you’ll find more of her work on Facebook 🪼

4. Sam Gee @samroygee studied Ocean Science in Plymouth, and the experience led her to get these amazing shark tattoos. “I've always loved the sea and felt connected to it, despite growing up in the Midlands. Sharks in particular captured my imagination. Such powerful, beautiful creatures. They have been misrepresented in our culture. However, the more we learn about them, the more people are growing to love them.” Tattoos by @sacredspiraltattoo at @studio_15oban 🦈

5. Marcus’ @excessivenoise tattoo is the HMS Comus, in memory of his granddad Christopher who served on the boat as a young Radio Operator and is a marker of his grit, determination and life experiences 🚢

6. Laura Pinkham studied marine biology and oceanography and also works at the Dolphin Hotel. This is Laura’s tattoo of a nudibranch, her favourite marine creature 🌊
