🚀 On the 22nd of September, 2024, the Rocket Powered Lander Project, became the first team in CPP College of Engineering history to implement an active controller during a static fire of a rocket engine. Over the twenty-five second test, the team was able to dynamically control the thrust and throttle between different target thrusts within a 5% margin. To add to this feat, they have also become the first student team of any school or university to design and test a liquid augmented solid rocket motor — an entirely new class of rocket engine.
Learn by doing at Cal Poly Pomona is taken to new horizons each year, as CPP students push the boundaries of technologies in hands on projects like no other university. The Rocket Powered Lander project is a fantastic example of this mantra amongst the many other opportunities at this university to get industry respected experience that will land you your dream job 🙌🏻

What starts at CPP can take you anywhere! 🚀🛰️💫
This commencement, the College of Engineering proudly celebrated Michael Beckage (’87, Engineering Technology), co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of Diversified Technical Systems, as he received an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree.
Beckage has built a career at the intersection of innovation, perseverance, and human safety. Through DTS, a global leader in data acquisition and sensor technologies, his work has supported safety testing across the automotive, aerospace, defense, and sports industries.
Under his leadership, DTS developed miniature devices that measure velocity, vibration, and acceleration in extreme environments, with technologies supporting NASA astronaut monitoring and Martian sample-return missions through NASA JPL. More recently, DTS technology has also supported NASA’s Artemis program.
Beyond his professional impact, Beckage continues to give back through mentorship, philanthropy, and his commitment to future engineers. If he looks familiar, it may be because he can often be found on campus supporting student success, attending events, and mentoring the next generation of Broncos.
We also celebrate his wife, Bridget Spanier, who received her honorary doctorate from the College of Education and Integrative Studies this weekend as well. Together, their generosity continues to support scholarships, student success, and future generations of Broncos.
Congratulations, Dr. Beckage! Thank you for showing our graduates what it means to become by doing and to give back by leading.
