Experience the masterful jazz artist Gwilym Simcock up close as he returns to his improvisational roots, joined by James Maddren and Conor Chaplin.

One of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene, Gwilym’s influences are wide ranging, from jazz legends including Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny, to classical composers including Maurice Ravel, Henri Dutilleux, Béla Bartók and Mark-Anthony Turnage. His music has been widely acclaimed as ‘engaging, exciting, often unexpected, melodically enthralling, complex yet hugely accessible’, and above all ‘wonderfully optimistic’.

On Monday 9th we welcome the world class saxophonist, composer, arranger & educator @julianarguellessax Julian Arguelles, who has been performing at the Club since the mid 1980’s.

Since then Julian has gone on to establish himself as one of the UK’s finest modern jazz saxophonists. From the legendary Loose Tubes through his worldwide collaborations with the likes of Dave Holland, John Taylor, Steve Swallow, Larry Grenadier, Jorge Rossy and Django Bates to his searching solo projects, Julian’s flowing, melodic, pitch perfect playing has been hugely influential to a whole generation of British & European jazz musicians.

Exceptionally gifted, his recordings have earned him the highest international accolades and he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for Services to Jazz (2017) as well as a Parliamentary Jazz Award for his 2016 album "Let it be Told".

Currently professor of jazz saxophone at the Institute of Jazz, Graz Austria, Julian's trips to the UK to perform are infrequent, so this is a rare chance to hear him in his favourite musical setting. The band is made up of long-time collaborators and unsurprisingly, fellow world class musicians @conor.chaplin Conor Chaplin-bass, @jmaddrendrums James Maddren-drums & the brilliant, multi-award-winning @gwilymsimcock Gwilym Simcock-piano. The programme will include many of Julian’s great compositions as well as music from his upcoming album “Echo Fields”. We will also be celebrating Julian’s Birthday (slightly late, but worth the wait!), so expect plenty of fun, special guests and of course, truly remarkable music!

Ambleside Days 2025! Always a grand time...

A minor smattering of gigs has been cobbled together by the indefatigable @tomollendorff this Autumn for his album release tour! Looking forward to visiting Finland 🇫🇮, France 🇫🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, UK 🇬🇧, China 🇨🇳, Australia 🇦🇺, South Korea 🇰🇷, and Germany 🇩🇪 en route, as well as playing with this series of great drummers. On the 16th November I have scheduled a cup of tea and a lie down...
