We need your help naming our new blimp 👇

We’ve been going back and forth for weeks and nothing feels right. So we’re handing it over to you. Leave your best name in the comments and on June 5th we’ll pick a few winners who will receive a gift from our shelves.💚

Anything goes — silly, serious, sound-nerdy. We want to hear it all!

When it comes to hiding a lav mic in clothing, there’s no single right answer — everyone has their method. Here’s Poul’s. He walks us through how he tucks a Deity mic inside a tie using invisible lav tape and our concealer. It’s not easy but it is clean, and effective. Watch till the end to see the result — and let us know how you do it in the comments.⬇️

What does your average workday look like? @herbert_verdino had a pretty good view most days recording sound for the Austrian feature ‘Klammer - Chasing the Line’ high up in the Alps 🏔.

Packing light takes practice: “You get used to shooting in locations that are not easily accessible by car, so you must think ahead. How much gear will I need? And when there is nowhere to charge them, how many batteries? Also, especially in winter when it can be very cold and windy, what accessories do I need to capture great audio and keep my equipment protected?”

Poul didn’t pick the name randomly. Bubble comes from the dead air chamber every microphone needs to survive the wind. Bee because it’s furry and looks like one. And Industries because Poul always meant to build something that lasts. That’s the story behind Bubblebee Industries💚

Sweaty talent + hidden lavs = problems every sound mixer eventually deals with.

In today’s Tonmeister Tips, Marcus shares a quick practical trick that can help keep lav microphones secure during long, hot shooting days, using the @bubblebeeindustries Invisible Skin Tape.

Simple. Fast. Useful.

Recording the sounds of the Namib desert with a hacked together 3D rig: Sound Devices Mixpre 10T, yoga block, eight DPA 6060 with AIR1 windshields and a massive Bubblebee fur wind jacket to complete the rig. It survived two nights out in a sandstorm and allowed me to capture lovely desert soundscapes.

Wind doesn’t wait for a controlled environment. Neither does Poul. The Windbubble was built for exactly this - the fur slows incoming wind, while the dead air chamber around the capsule does the rest. Real conditions, no studio setups, no excuses. New York just proved it.

We asked Poul to show us something that never made it to production. He didn’t hesitate. The Mic Cone was designed for one thing — keeping your lav mic exactly where you need it, no matter where you hide it. Whether tucked inside a tie or hidden under clothing, the soft cone expands to hold the mic in the optimal position every time. It worked. It solved a real problem. But it never launched. Sometimes that’s just how product development goes. What do you think — should we bring it back?

From recording African lion and hyenas to capturing the sound of rabbits in a Surrey field, field recordist @thegeorgevlad says The Windbubbles ensure his audio is always pristine.

“I do a lot of unattended recording where I set up a microphone rig and leave it for up to a week, and I like to have the smallest footprint possible because that attracts the least attention, which is important when you are recording wildlife, the best way to achieve this is with a lavalier microphone and a Windbubble.”

We started working on the Lav Concealer in 2015. The biggest challenge was finding a material that didn’t resonate - one soft enough to absorb vibrations and friction noise. Three years later of testing, rubber was the answer. Small detail. Massive difference 💚

Made from soft, biodegradable rubber.

One of the interesting developments on In The Grey came from 1st AS's Arthur Fenn and Robin Johnson who had been pointing out for some time something I initially wasn’t fully appreciating as a Production Sound Mixer.

When operating very close with traditional black or dark grey boom furries in strong available light conditions, they felt the boom wasn’t just avoiding shadows: it was subtly stealing light from the image.

Not enough to create an obvious shadow, but enough that they could feel a slight darkening on actors’ faces when working tight at frame line. Almost like introducing a touch of negative fill into the shot.

As a Mixer, I’m always pushing booms closer. Closer mic placement means better dialogue quality, more detail, more intimacy and a far better signal-to-noise ratio between the performance and the environment around it.

Before heading to Tenerife, where In The Grey had huge amounts of exterior work relying heavily on natural sunlight and bounce light, we started experimenting with alternatives custom made for us by Bubblebee Industries @bubblebeeindustries .On the films leading up to In the Grey we started speaking closely with DPs & Gaffers, particularly legendary gaffer David Smith @davidsmith172020 about the problem.

Pure white fur immediately felt wrong because it risked becoming a moving bounce source if direct sunlight hit it. So instead we tested multiple shades of off-white looking for something completely neutral.

What we ended up with was this slightly warm off-white furry you can see here. A colour David Smith felt would neither absorb light from the image nor reflect additional light back into it.

In this shot you can see Arthur and Robin working exactly at the distances I want them operating as a mixer. Right on the edge of frame, extremely close to the actors, in harsh exterior conditions, without negatively affecting the photography. This really helped our long running collaboration with Guy Ritchies DP Ed Wild @edwilddop

Having this creative upgrade genuinely increased dialogue quality on this film.

Capturing The Sound Of Disappearing Glaciers with @trexbeverly 🧊

What sound does a glacier make? To the uninitiated, this may seem like a ridiculous question because one imagines they are simply silent expanses of ice. But that’s not the case. They make all kinds of sounds covering a huge dynamic range, from cracking and popping to booming and tinkling and a multitude of sounds in between. Indeed, they are so noisy that they almost seem alive and breathing, possibly even talking to us in some alien language that we don’t understand.

In this BBIintheWild article, sound recordist Thomas Rex Beverly describes his groundbreaking work in one of the world’s most awe-inspiring wildernesses.
