Last month we held a portrait event to raise money for individuals affected by ICE.
First I want to say thank you to everyone who bought tickets, showed up, shared the day, and aided to the idea of justice and care for the humans this administration has deemed as criminals for the crimes of existing.
Secondly, I implore all of my white peers to keep your minds open and remember the spaces you occupy, work, and excel in. To the majority of people in America this land is stolen land. Treat your neighbor with the same respect and care you would accept for yourself. Thank you to @photohousedetroit , @garagecultural @barelyhispanic @Gabrielxduran, and @1inamelyion for putting this together and housing this project. And thank you to the photographers who donated their time and skills to the cause.
Collections from the event have been dispersed and donated to The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (@chirla) and The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center (@swdirc)

Rooted in Rhythm is a series of mini documentaries from Detroit Education Narrative Collective member and Southwest Detroit’s own, Xavier Cuevas. The series tells the story of local arts organization Motor City Street Dance Academy, which has served the Southwest Detroit area for the better part of the past decade. Using the elements of Hip Hop as a tool to empower youth with social-emotional development, professional skills, career paths, and healthy living, MCSDA works to enhance the lives of Detroiters through Hip Hop, physical activity, and healthy living. I took some scarves to Riverside for @detroitcityfootballclub
It’s funny but the serendipity I’ve experienced in my time here always makes me think. The number of things that just kinda work out. Was a nice day. Needed some photos of scarves. So I go to a park in the neighborhood and there’s just dozens of youth playing for the club. And didn’t take any photos.
I’ve said it a few times and I’ll keep saying it until it’s not true. It’s really difficult to maintain the pessimism we all know and love when every other day you stumble across people doing what they love in a city you love.
