What are the unique things music can do to explore and evoke the past? Is writing a song set in 1985 any different from writing one set in the 19th century? And how do songwriters balance nostalgia, critique, and the values of the present to make stories of bygone days resonate in our own time?

Hosted at @babayagasns by @groundbirdsings, this is the sixth in a series of events where some of the North East's top musicians will be in conversation, discussing how they think about the songs they write.

This event features @aurora_engine and @detroit_tourist_board Aurora Engine is a songstress and sonic artist from Co. Durham. Fusing real instruments (harp/piano), voice, analogue recording devices and progressive electronics, her work encapsulates a singular and striking sonic landscape. She channels voices past and collects foley sounds which are carefully blended with beguiling songs and compelling soundscapes creating an immersive performance with it’s own visual identity. Expect layered vocals, magic realism, dark themes of contemporary relevance, tales of imaginary friends, miniaturists and the porn industry. In upcoming EP 'Railway Queen' she blends industrial sounds of railways and industries with songs and folk tales of working class life based on her own family heritage.

Detroit Tourist Board is an indie-folk trio founded by Detroit-born singer-songwriter Patrick Lawrence, who is now collaborating and performing with a full band: Patrick (lead vocals, uke, violin); Dom Lydon (guitars, vocals), Nicola Bushell (uke, vocals). NARC magazine described their music as 'The perfect backdrop for lazing in the sun, summer road trips or nursing a coffee on a hungover Sunday morning.’ Their new album is 'The Here & The Now.'

Each act will play for about 30 minutes each, followed by an onstage Q&A discussion.

Doors will be at 5pm, with an opening song from Groundbird around 5:15, Aurora Engine on around 5:30 and Detroit Tourist Board at 6:15, with the Q&A starting at 7.

This event is the last in a series of four generously funded by a North Shields Cultural Quarter grant from North Tyneside Council. Tickets from the EventBrite link in my LinkTree!

Paul Michael Henry and Iain McDonald @paul.michael.henry

“Paul Michael Henry is a dancer, composer, writer, and performance-maker based in Glasgow. Their work lives somewhere between ritual, Butoh, punk rock, ecological enchantment, and the crisis of late capitalism lived through a bodymind that’s deeply confused by it. Recurring themes include love, rebellion, body amnesia, environmental destruction and atrophy of the soul in consumerist society.

Iain McDonald is pulled to create—from nothing, from excess—but remains caught between aesthetics, authenticity and representation; the guitar unplayed, phrases suspended, leaving him hoarse, still arguing with a moment long since passed. It has yet to answer.”

Aurora Engine @aurora_engine

Aurora Engine is a songstress and sonic artist whose practise encompasses feminism and ritual. Fusing real instruments (harp/piano), voice, analogue recording devices and progressive electronics, her work encapsulates a singular and striking sonic landscape. Huge huge thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate International Women’s Day with us @bongoclub.edinburgh - it was beautiful and fierce fun!

Massive thanks to @kirstylawmusic & @estherswiftmusic for their afternoon performances and workshops and to @jemimathewes & @faith.eliott for their gorgeous performances and to the fab @j_b_seal on sound - everyone did a fabulous job and we were able to make a donation to Scottish Women’s Aid with the profits.

In such difficult global and political circumstances it’s so important for us to continue coming together, resisting patriarchal systems that harm everyone, demanding better support and protection and making space for downright simple joy.

Just under one week to go until Cryptic Nights at @glasgowtramway 💥

Flutter by @aurora_engine is an immersive music and visual performance exploring her lived experience of Tourette’s through voice, harp and electronics.

Here’s a first look at @mettjehunneman's intricate geometric sculpture: a woven network of natural materials and strings transformed by projection into a tactile visual instrument, mirroring every pulse, glitch and harmony of the score.

Stay curious…
