If 16-year-old me could see me now, she would be my number one hater. Right next to her would be twenty-something me. They would be in the gc talkin’ ‘bout all the time (and money) I spend on something that I’m objectively bad at. Y’know, I’m sure if you dug up my old tweets circa my early thirties, you’d find some questionable takes on marathoners, too. Straight up hateration all around!
Well, 2.5 years and 5 marathons in, I’m barely scratching the surface of something really special. I continue to invest in my relationship with running because, first and foremost, it is a relationship with myself. I respect the honest hard work. I love the process. I trust my commitment to the journey.
I often lament beginning at 39…I just wish I had started sooner. But the deeper I get into it, I realize I wouldn’t have had the vocabulary of life experiences to comprehend what running is here to teach me now. It had to happen this way—I would’ve hated it otherwise.
This block, I learned a lot about running and, of course, things not about running—some of the lessons still too tender to share (e.g., detachment from outcome, the nature of desire, love and self-concept, etc). And while I’m not one to keep my earnestness aside, I’m learning that maybe I should (within reason and with great trust).
I have a lot of gratitude to broadcast and will get around to it with a huge photo dump otw. I’ve already thanked most of y’all, but you deserve your flowers in every which way.
