Hello friends, new and old! We are long overdue for a reintroduction at this point.
Hi, I’m Amy. In case you missed it, I moved from Portland, OR, to Asheville, NC, at the end of 2023. We’ve been here in Asheville for just a few months and are settling in!
Whether you’ve been with me following my art since my college days or you’ve just joined me in my most recent mushroom exploration, I’m so glad you are here.
Here are three fun facts about me, and I’d love it if you could introduce (or reintroduce) yourself in the comments!
1. I won a goldfish my senior year of high school at a local festival and he lived for eleven years! For most of those years, he was under the care of my mother. His name was Edgar, like Edgar Allan Poe, and he had a massive tank all to himself.
2. For the first 12 years of my life, I was convinced I would become an ichthyologist when I grew up. Then I learned that the study of fish involved dissecting dead fish, and I cried and decided that was not the career for me.
3. While I was in Portland, I received an autism diagnosis. This process unlocked and explained my own brain to me in a way I’d never imagined. So much of how I understand and process my world is through my art, and learning about my brain has been revolutionary in all aspects of my life.
In recent years, the main focus of my work has been capturing and recreating my own experience of joy. In learning more about my autistic brain, I have realized that the way my mind and body process joy is different from the majority of my peers.
My brain zooms in on tiny moments, and I get completely lost. It is a sensory symphony; colors, patterns, and textures feel more vibrant.
The best way I’ve come up with to explain how this feels to me is being front row at a concert by your favorite musician. You can feel the bass in your bones, completely engulfed by the moment and the music. Time doesn’t seem to exist anymore.
That is how I feel in the moments I aspire to capture in my work. And my deepest desire is that each piece brings you joy, too. Whenever you see them in your home, I hope you get a hint of the transcendence I felt.

I fall more and more in love with this studio of mine every single day.
We built this in our backyard and I love the permanence of this space.
I love the way the light hits the back wall early in the morning and as the sun is setting in the evening.
I love that I have room for a proper space on my wall just for works in progress.
I love the little corner with all my different sheep, are by my six year old self, and art by my friends
I love having a rainbow shelf of roving again.
I love how this space was designed and built just for me in collaboration with people who love me.
I love what the investment in this space represents for my future goals and plans.
I love that I can watch the azaleas and roses bloom from my desk.
I love dreaming about all the art this space will let me create.
I can’t wait to see how this space changes over the years to come and how that supports my art practice.

Harmony Reconstructed 1
This was the first big piece I made post-Helene and it kicked off a series I’m still working on. Currently, I’m working on the 8th piece in this series. You can scroll back a few to see the diptych of Harmony Reconstructed 6-7.
My smaller works are all part of the Forest Floor series. They are smaller, and focused on one element that dominates the piece. A trio of oyster mushrooms, a scattering of chanterelles, a mix of Turkey tail mushrooms. The main focus is this little moment.
The Harmony series blends these elements together and explores how they play off each other to create a larger scene.
This piece is 32” x 42” and was created with needle felted wool and a spray of embroidery.
If you are interested in collecting this work, or any of my other work, you can always get in touch with me via email.

Forest Floor 2507 + some behind the scenes in the studio.
I’ve been intentional about rounding out my studio practice with space and time for experimentation and sketching. I can have a laser focus on finishing work, but if I’m not also planning, preparing, researching, sketching, and gathering inspiration I’m less prepared to create new work.
Right now in the studio I’m revisiting some turkey tail forms and found myself referring back to this piece, some of my reference books, and some of my other notes. I’m playing with a completely different color palette than the vibrant blues of this piece, but the forms are coming from the same base inspiration.
It’s been fun to have my work back in the studio with me and I’ve been enjoying this piece sitting right behind my shoulder while I’m working!
Forest Floor 2507 is 8” x 10” and created using needle felted wool, set in a walnut frame.
My artwork is available for purchase at amyreaderartist.com

For my needle felted work, each finished piece is signed with a little letter A in the corner. I embroider my signature on my small works, and needle felt it on my large works.
Figuring out how to sign my fiber artwork was a bit of a journey. For a while, I signed my work on the back but I never really liked that it was completely hidden to anyone my myself, curators, and collectors.
Eventually I landed on a little letter A on the front and then full information on the back. On the back I write the medium, completion date, and a written signature.
I’ve grown quite attached to my little miniature signature on the front and in my larger works I like to integrate it into the texture and colors in that area.
All of my artwork is primarily needle felted wool with embroidery accents. My work is inspired by the forest floor and all of the hidden universes that live just out of sight.

Harmony Reconstructed 6 (left) and Harmony Reconstructed 7 (right) are sibling pieces. They were created in conversation with each other during my re-exploration of the Harmony series as a whole.
The majority of the original Harmony series was destroyed in 2024 by Hurricane Helene and for the past year and a half I’ve been exploring what that series looks like now.
I’ve toyed with a few different ideas to describe my overarching approach to my forest floor-inspired work and all of the phrases and themes kept tying back to music. Whispers of the Wood, Sensory Symphony, Harmony, Intermezzo, and more. Right now I’m processing through the branch of pieces that fit under the Harmony label in my mind. They are pieces that combine multiple elements and texture to blend together within the same piece. Or in this case, within a pair of siblings.
All of my work is needle felted wool, and my larger works are stretched and framed like a canvas painting. You can see my work online at amyreaderartist.com or locally I. Asheville at Trackside Studios in the River Arts District.
To inquire about purchasing a piece or showing the Harmony series in your space, please reach out via email.

Dropped off seven new smalls today at @tracksidestudios375art to give my wall a refresh!
I’ve made fifteen new works already this year and I’m finishing up building my backyard art studio!
If you want to take any of these pieces home, stop by Trackside any day of the week!
These pieces are a continuation of my needle felted forest floor series inspired by the tiny worlds living just out of sight.

Current work-in-progress that is currently in “I can’t decide how to finish it off” jail. It feels like it needs *something* else but I can’t decide what else, so it will hang out on my wall in jail for a while
I keep thinking “oh I’ll finish this up today!” And I’ve been thinking that about this piece for a week so I think I need to recalibrate my estimation abilities.
Alas, maybe this piece will be finished next week!
This piece is needle felted and the background is two layers of prefelt with layers of wool I’ve dyed, curly locks, and needle felted mushrooms. Eventually it will be stretched and framed!

I’ve been doing a series of videos of One Piece Start to Finish for my Patreon community. It’s not quite in real time (they would be intolerably long) but it gives a good sense of how a piece comes together.
I just finished this piece and I’d filmed, edited the video, and was working on the thumbnail so I could upload it and I decided it wasn’t actually done. So I went back and changed it a bit the next day and this is the final piece!
This month was a chattier video than usual because there was a lot more to share about the process and how I’m gearing up for a solo show in less than two weeks.
My friend @sydsthread sent me a picture of a skirt with a vibrant blue Turkey tail mushroom print and I have not been able to get that color palette out of my head. I’ve been reaching for more muted tones lately, so working with this vibrant blue was such a fun change.
If you’d like to see more of my art process, and get felting tutorials, and so much more, I’d love for you to join us over on Patreon. I always share a new long form video every month ranging from a detailed tutorial, to a behind the scenes vlog, and the one piece start to finish like what we did for December.

My “work in progress” space has taken over the majority of a wall. There are two more in progress pieces that don’t fit on that wall.
I’m finishing up a few big pieces for an upcoming solo show and being able to step back and assess a piece is so important for my process.
In my temporary workspace, the only place that makes sense is to attach my pieces to my storage shelves. It’s only slightly a problem when I need to get things off of my shelves 😅
I’m still shipping your orders but the Christmas delivery window has passed! You can still get calendars and kits for the new year.
