A-Doc
Asian American Documentary Network ✨
We are a national network that increases the visibility and support of Asian Americans in the documentary field.

2026 marks a major milestone: A-Doc’s 10-year anniversary! Join us in celebrating a decade of our vibrant community in bloom 🌷 🌸 💛
Our anniversary logo was designed by our very own Communications Coordinator, @melo_gao_loveswhales. Read her inspiration for the piece below:
“A-Doc: 10 Years of Community in Bloom,” imagines nonfiction storytelling as a vibrant ecosystem that is inseparable from the people who sustain it. The design is a love letter to A-Doc’s journey, celebrating the past decade while dreaming of a future that is accessible, sustainable, and rooted in community.
The smiling house reflects the foundation that has been nurtured by our intergenerational community, planting the seeds for future storytellers. A canopy of chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, and daffodils, symbolize joy and new beginnings. Centered in the design is a group of people reflecting and sharing, not isolated, but moving forward together. The deliberate inclusion of the snail represents resilience, and a gentle reminder to make time for rest. In an industry that moves rapidly, the film reel as the snail’s shell reimagines community as a home that you can always return to.
The bright shades of tangerine, fuschia, and chartreuse contribute a sense of whimsy and collective dreaming. As A-Doc looks forward to the next 10 years, this design honors the roots that connect us and celebrates the community we continue to build together.” - Meloddy Gao

About the film: “An intimate look at inequality in San Francisco through the lives of Single Room Occupancy residents. Filmed over six years, it paints a mosaic of strangers relying on 80 sq ft rooms to stay housed and avoid homelessness. Their fight to break free from cyclical trauma and crushing structural forces is a universal story about the future of the American city.”

Streaming @criterionchannel this May: “Directed by Kimi Takesue: Crossings and Encounters!” 🌾⛰️🌊
“The visually mesmerizing and deeply reflective films of Kimi Takesue traverse genres—including documentary, fiction, and experimental forms—to explore the charged spaces between observer and observed. Often centered on the act of travel, Takesue’s work follows tourists and locals as they navigate shared yet unequal terrain.
In evocative shorts and acclaimed features, she turns an unblinking lens on cross-cultural encounters, revealing the subtle tensions, curiosities, and power dynamics that shape how we see and are seen across differences. Through her immersive long takes, Takesue invites audiences into moments of intimacy and unease that continually challenge our assumptions.”
The collection includes the following titles: “Onlookers” (2023), “95 and 6 to Go” (2016), “Looking for Adventure” (2013), “That Which Once Was” (2011), “Where Are You Taking Me?” (2010), “Suspended” (2009), “E=NYC2” (2005), “Summer of the Serpent” (2004), “Heaven’s Crossroad” (2002), “Rosewater” (1999), and “Bound” (1995).
