🌸Selections From: Tapestries is a Dance-Theater piece guided by the curious narrative of The Unicorn Tapestries or Hunt of the Unicorn (1495-1505) housed at The Met Cloisters, reimagined through the queering out of Ukrainian folklore and tales. This performance consists of six short vignettes developed through a rigorous and quirky movement vocabulary abstracted from Ukrainian folk dance, ballet, American modern dance, and contemporary dance. It serves as an embodied archive, an ever-evolving Сморгасбург of the subjective history of queer Ukrainian culture.

Flashes of movement onstage echo the original tapestries–the hunt, the betrayal of the unicorn by a maiden before its capture, and so on. Perhaps Ponomarenko, in this physical interpretation, is inviting us to consider the unicorn as a metaphor for queer identity: rare, utterly beautiful, and in danger?”-Brendan McCall

What does it mean for a white, European body to perform this work in the United States?
