🇫🇷Let your hair down tonight for the opening of “Rapunzels” at @faces_galerie, the solo show
by photographer @silviadraz.

“Rapunzels” celebrates women with extraordinarily long hair, rooted in Silvia’s own experience growing up in a newly-independent Lithuania, where many women and girls began to express themselves through their hair.

Shot in London, each person photographed was asked what their hair represents to them, resulting in a series of intimate portraits where personal stories, cultural heritage and identity intertwine.

“When asked about their hair, so many of the models saw it as some kind of shield…It could be something for them to hide behind, but often something that protects them”- Silvia told us.

Rapunzels is open at @faces_galerie until July.

A flash sale for the Eurostar led these two filmmakers to travel to Paris to create something “just for them”.

Filmmakers @paddyking and @adamsingodia felt a growing sense of disenchantment over “a lack of opportunities where the usual hustling” and when “trying to get commissioned work falls on deaf ears”.

Stripped of client expectations they found themselves trusting instinct again rather than second guessing. Filming on the street with the cast relied heavily on improvisation, and working on the time constraints led to some of the film’s most inventive moments.

Titled “Auxanna”, the first film follows a young woman working as a cleaner in an expensive apartment. “Elyas” follows 3 young men over the course of the day.

He didn’t love the camera being on him—“I think because he thought he wasn’t photogenic.” Photographer @annikaweertz turned the lens on her father a couple weeks before he died. Recognising the importance of the project to his daughter, he went along with it anyway.

Revisiting it over a year later, it’s become a study of grief and a reminder that the encounters that seem so inconsequential are anything but. Photographs can help us to reassess what lies in front of us, and Annika hopes that her project, titled “Passing”, will encourage people to see their loved ones in a fresh light, just as she did.

“I think it’s very valuable to look at what’s actually happening, not what we wish happened,” she says. “A lot of the time we question, ‘Should our families be different?…But then, does it really matter?”

Coming to Marseille this week ! On Thursday, with @wepresent we open « Rapunzel », a solo exhibition by Lithuanian photographer Silvia Draz @silviadraz.

Situated between fashion and portraiture, Silvia Draz’s work is shaped by her darkroom practice; soft light and a delicate yet mysterious aesthetic. With her series Rapunzel, she draws inspiration from historical photographs of women with extraordinarily long hair, reinterpreting this visual heritage through contemporary portraits rooted in intimacy, memory and self-expression.

Echoing the exhibition, artist Gab Bois @gabbois will take over the façade of FACES with a temporary installation extending some of the visual motifs of Rapunzel into the public space.

Join us upstairs at our new floor @faces_galerie

📍 FACES — 232 rue d’Endoume, Marseille 7e

OPENING — May 21 • 6:30 PM / 10 PM

Somewhere between Niger and Benin, photographer @tamibebourdanne sits in the backseat of a car. The windows on both sides are framing the changing landscape and offering him excerpts of a larger story he wants to tell.

We caught up with him about this new series which he’s considering a road trip story. He tells us how the journey has taught him that “the world, when seen slowly and openly, is endlessly alive.”

He hopes to build a future archive by photographing life in the many ways it’s lived today across West Africa. But it was on return trips to his parent’s countries of Chad, Niger and Nigeria, that documentary work first started to make sense to him.

Now streaming on WePresent: this powerful short film from duo @luigi_sibona and @niellaharboine exploring the impact of depression, a family under pressure and the freedom found in nature.

“Far From the Plains” is a story of two parts. In a dark London flat, a depressed mother lives with her devoted teenage son. The mother’s body is overrun by an expansive black mould which creeps up the walls and threatens to devour them both.

“She’s sort of fermenting in this house”, explains Arboine. These claustrophobic scenes are contrasted with the boy’s discovery of a rare green city space, with @kojeyradical playing the nurturing stable hand.

Drawing on personal experiences, the filmmaker duo wanted to explore “how children use their imagination to cope with grief, pain and disaster”, citing films “Life of Pi” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” as key inspirations.
