Miyoko Ito’s oil on canvas painting, 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘷𝘦 (1957), stands as a early example of her distinctive approach to abstraction, in which geometric structure and symbolic suggestion merge to create a quietly enigmatic visual language. The work reflects a pivotal moment in Ito’s development. At the time, she was moving away from direct representation toward what would later become known as “Allusive Abstractionism”—a term Ito subsequently devised with fellow Chicago artists Richard Loving, William Conger, and Frank Piatek to describe their overlapping approaches. Although the biblical title of 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘷𝘦 evokes one of the most familiar narratives in Western art, Ito does not depict recognizable figures. Instead, she constructs a pair of interlocking, abstracted forms that suggest human presence without fully defining it.

According to art historian and curator Jordan Stein, who wrote the prefatory essay for the illustrated exhibition volume, 𝘔𝘪𝘺𝘰𝘬𝘰 𝘐𝘵𝘰: 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 (Pre-Echo Press, 2023):

𝘉𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘥-1950𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘵𝘰’𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘺𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘥, 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘦-𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘬𝘺, 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯, 𝘣𝘭𝘶𝘦, 𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸.

Although Ito is now more associated with and celebrated for the dreamlike paintings of her middle and late career—in which her geometry becomes ever so subtle—her work in the 1950s presents a fascinating portal into her transition or rebirth as a primarily abstract artist.

Hank Willis Thomas’s Resistance (Leopard Man Punctum) extends the artist’s ongoing investigation into the power of images and their use within, and in resistance to, racist colonial histories. Originating from his Punctum series—drawn from Roland Barthes’s concept of the photographic “punctum”—the work draws on archival material, in this case an article from a 1943 issue of Popular Science about West African “leopard men,” which Thomas isolates, reframes, and transforms into a three-dimensional form. By extracting and enlarging a single fragment of the original image, he invites viewers to consider what is emphasized or omitted, and how meaning shifts through acts of selection and reinterpretation.

The sculpture engages the complex history of the Leopard (Anyoto) Society, a West African group active from the late 19th to early 20th century. Represented in Western culture as violent, evil, and sexually promiscuous, the “leopard men” joined together in the pursuit of political emancipation and freedom from colonial rule. “Colonial Africans suffered rape, abuse, murder and pillaging, and in reaction secret societies were formed as a type of rebellion,” says Thomas. “[Resistance (Leopard Man Punctum)] is based on a rendering of a famous work in Belgium of a leopard man preying on a person who’s a colonial collaborator. In a later movie, Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1946), the actors are clearly Europeans. Most of our interpretations of African popular culture are filtered through European mythology about Africans, and it has nothing to do with Africans at all.”
