Sofya Shaikut
Working at the crossroads of butoh and philosophy & exploring alternative forms of subjectivity often in collaboration with Carlos A. Segovia
📍Berlin
Butoh is shamanism, my art aims at bringing unseen forces to light. In this performance I become a spirit of possession and control and the frustrated desire to escape it. (Check out what a ‘yokai’ is in Japanese culture”)
Thank you so much for coming to see Klara yesterday and special thanks to @pandora_gallery_kreuzberg for hosting her! #butoh #dance #performance #berlin #movement #theatre #art #gallery #vogel #tanzen #aufführung
Moving through water, flowers, falling snow and leafs and sometimes kisses at @ifpa.drama. Thank you for inviting me! It was beautiful ❤️

"Sofya held the space for a world in the shape of a shared dream, and called it forth, from myself — and I am sure from each of us that attended — with such an incredible delicacy, precision, and craft that, still, even in the weeks after the workshop, the resonance of this oneiric experience continues to vibrate within me." — Chris
"Liliya is the best dance teacher I’ve ever met. She heals and calms through dance. She doesn’t teach you how to move — she teaches you how to truly live your dance, and that’s an incredibly valuable experience." — Polina

📍Via Luigi Nono, 7
I feel that sometimes there are things within our bodies that want to manifest or exist, but have no room to do so. They lie so deep inside us — in the body and the soul — that we cannot even name them, cannot bring them into words, make them visible for ourselves or share them with others.
My new butoh creation, The Mire, is, among other things, about the inability to speak.
First performed at Wonder Full Fest in Berlin organized by @genuachet and @elektroschuhe. Thank you for making this happen!
If you are in Milan, watch me perform The Mire this Friday at @tempiodelfuturoperduto and in Brescia this Saturday at @vulcano.brescia 🔥
At the end of August I will perform it again in Berlin after a 4-day butoh workshop called Dancing is Burning, check it at my profile!

Join this 26 hours of dancing and burning! This workshop will be led by @being_liliya and @sofya_shaikut, exploring movement, presence and transformation in the space between contemporary dance and butoh. Whether butoh or contemporary dance, true dancing is always burning. But what does that mean? Where do you burn—and how?
This is a question of life itself: how intensely do you feel alive, and how does life burn within you as you dance—each step moving toward death.

Butoh at the Night of Philosophy at @forumgroningen !
Dancing butoh is being born anew each time and seeing the world through a new lense. And a newborn does not wonder what kind of face it has and does not judge what it sees.
Improvising with @red_brut ❤️
Thank you @zot_groningen for inviting me!

❤️This booklet presents the methodologies developed during the Erasmus+ training course Memento Mori, held in the Netherlands in August 2025. The training explored how awareness of mortality can deepen reflection on life, relationships, and meaning.
The publication gathers practical tools used during the training, including butoh-inspired embodiment exercises, movement and imagery work, storytelling, poetry writing, nature-based activities, and reflective group processes. Many activities use the body as a starting point for learning, combining sensation, imagination, and reflection.
The booklet also introduces principles for creating a safe learning environment when working with sensitive topics. These include accountability, consent, calibration, and care for oneself, others, and the shared space.
The methods are designed for youth workers, facilitators, and educators who wish to explore themes such as mortality, transformation, life cycles, and presence in a creative and experiential way. Activities can be adapted for different groups and contexts.
Aims
– To support youth workers in approaching the topic of death and mortality through non-formal education.
– To introduce embodied and creative methods that encourage reflection on life, change, and personal values.
– To provide practical tools that can be adapted for youth work and community learning environments.
The project was co-founded by Erasmus+ and @het_nji
