MAMA WE MADE IT!

While I was in LA I couldn’t help but stop by my guild office just to see it in person. Right in the middle of sunset blvd in West Hollywood, where I stayed.

When I first heard about the @directorsguild and the rigorous requirements it took to get in as an Assistant Director, I thought it would be literally impossible to have the opportunity to work over 600+ days on set, especially when at the time NO ONE looked like me. Cut to 9 years later, I’m a year plus into the DGA, have gotten the opportunity to travel to every part of the country, have flown first class, 7 projects under my belt with one of the most POC represented teams in the area and already bidding for my next job. All I can say is: to God be the glory!!

This time 17 years ago, I was sleeping on a small bed in the dinning room of the place my parents had found us in Memphis after Katrina, shopping at Walmart for any clothes I could get. 17 years later, I was staying on the top floor on Sunset blvd and shopping in Hollywood. Again I say, to God be the glory!

So excited to see what this journey will bring next. Just know when it comes, I’m coming just as I am. #shive

I received a new mission for the summer: teach the youth of New Orleans East filmmaking for the summer.

I never thought I’d be doing this like this. Teaching kids from the same area I’m from, in the literal same area I used to go to summer camp at, teaching something I didn’t have access to at that age.

I remember being in summer camp and writing about how I wanted to be a writer and write movies when I grew up. It’s crazy how full circle it’s come.

Last week, me and my homie Derrick Wells put cameras in these kids hands for the first time in their lives. And no cap, they been on GO ever since. I can’t wait to see what they produce this summer.

This mission work has come at a time when I need it more than them! So I’m grateful for this opportunity. S/o @thehangoutnola for making this happen!
