4 Bishop's Mitre blooms - 4.13 terabytes of data - 9,069 robotic spirals

'FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse' observes vast landscapes and the intimate breath of cacti.

To reveal the incredible, often unseen moment of a cactus in bloom, we engineered our own robotic camera rigs. They moved with precision around the flowering plants, day and night, spiral after spiral.

The outcome: the most intricate timelapse pointclouds we’ve ever made. These will become one of our large-scale artworks installed in the Cactus Gallery of Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden.

‘Desert Pulse’ is a portrait of a place over time: a year in the life of the Sonoran Desert. Opening October 2025 at @dbgphx.

"Desert Pulse," an art installation at the Desert Botanical Garden (@dbgphx) in Phoenix, is a multi-sensory immersion featuring time-lapse imagery of Arizona's Sonoran Desert – a landscape pulsing with life.

@leecowancbs talks with U.K. architects Matt Shaw and Will Trossell, who brought a 3-D LIDAR scanner (a tool used in surveying) to the desert to capture tens of millions of data points, which ScanLAB Projects converted into vibrant digital evocations of an ecosystem breathing, growing and retreating.

Things to do in Arizona: FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse is at @dbgphx it’s an immersive outdoor art installation with pieces throughout the gardens. You can see it day and night now through May 10, 2026. The whole process of how they created this art is fascinating. @scanlab_projects trained people out here and had them to go to multiple sites around Arizona every single day for a year or something to scan in the same place with their technology, but also with a camera so that they could add color back into the scans. And the finished results are beautiful.
