2026 PEACE Partnership Highlight ✨In Cultural Connections, 30 students at Newfield High School explored the relationship between African myth, ritual, art, and their own cultural identities through research, storytelling, mask-making, and performance. Guided by librarian Lisa Cook, Studio Art teacher Shay Steuart, and cultural partner Paul Rodriguez, students examined how African ritual and masks influenced works like Alvin Ailey’s Revelations and Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.
The project culminated in original masks and personal cultural narratives presented alongside the school’s drum club during a Black History Month celebration, bringing together visual art, music, movement, and storytelling in a powerful expression of identity and community. 🤍
This partnership was made possible through PAC’s PEACE Project (Partners in Education, Arts and Community Empowerment), a U.S. Department of Education Assistance for Arts Education funded program.

We’ve Been Down This Road Before by Leyla Sefket ✨Explores identity, memory, and the strange familiarity of American suburbia through paintings that feel both humorous and quietly unsettling. Drawing from her Long Island upbringing, Sefket transforms everyday symbols, road signs, suburban spaces, and moments frozen in time into reflections on conformity, comfort, and the emotional weight of place.
