I’m beyond thrilled to share that I had the incredible opportunity to record my piece with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, made possible through the Miriam Mayer Perspective Grant that I received in May. Budapest Scoring generously sponsored the grant and offered their full services to me and the other incredible awardee, @michelle_m_isaac !

I spend a lot of time thinking about my ancestors, and hoping that I’m making them proud. My piece, “The Past is Speaking”, captures that powerful moment when you realize the strength and wisdom of those who came before you lives on within you.

From re-orchestrating this piece that I wrote during @jongnic Bontemps’ residency at @columbiachi, to prepping the score and parts on my own and watching it come to life, I felt incredibly honored to bring “The Past is Speaking” a new life.

As I get acquainted with living in LA full time and pursuing my career as a film composer and musician fully, opportunities like this one so graciously allow me to reconnect with the work I do and purpose behind my journey; Honoring the past and empowering the future through music that belongs to our diaspora.

Rainy in LA so I HAD to bring the ☀️

but seriously these past two years in LA have brought an immense amount of growth change and lots of joy! From premiering my work with the Vancouver Symphony to traveling across the country for film festivals showcasing my scores, to finding community in outside and all around music. I’m looking forward to what the next two years will hold :-)

This film has been on an incredible journey from @hollyshorts, @americanblackfilmfestival @blackstarfest and so many places in between. I really loved leaning into writing themes for the main characters set to specific instruments that @rubyrosecollins and I felt captured Nina and Miwo’s voices. Many thanks to @mattgagnon.wav for his cello playing, to @johnrakecomposer for being a brilliant copyist and to @chandadancy for connecting me with the production team.
