I recently spent an enjoyable evening (two and half hours!) talking books and photos over virtual gin and tonic with the prolific photography podcaster and collector Brad Feuerhelm @ordinarylight for his @nearesttruth series. We spoke about the insights into vernacular visual culture that come through looking at a LOT of photographs (I did my PhD about an archive of 55,000 photos but Brad had a phase of looking at 70,000 photos a day!). We shared the visual and magical sensibilities that come from being lapsed Catholics. The chat went from histories of nudism and crisps via Totnes and Lily Dale to Kibbo Kift and KLF. Along the way we shared our admiration for @kim.beil @donlonbooks @sourcephotographicreview @chris__packet @sportsbanger @seance_book @projectbphotos among others. The workshop is proposed as a collective experience—combining the strength of working within a group with the development of each participant's individual voice. Together, starting from initial prompts proposed by Lua, we will select a concept to serve as our starting point and source of inspiration for creating images within a specific territory.
