I don’t vibe with everything in this clip, in particular the usage of the phrase “real man”. I dont think principles need be defined in relation to gender in the same way that I don’t think any living being needs to define gender at any point, if it doesn’t feel right. All art has cultural and linguistic context, and this too is something to “wrestle” with.
Disclaimers aside, I’ve returned to this clip during the past two months of my sobriety, and I find depth in it.
I believe that a well-practiced martial artist channels, circulates, and directs their energy in the same way that any mindful artist does. In practice and performance, we maintain presence, breathing, and focus.
I would like to see a world where we continue to understand how the infinite arts practiced are one.
Some questions I continually ask myself:
-What is interesting to me and what is calling to me now?
-What makes me feel present, focused, excited, and alive?
-Can I return to that space with breathing and gratitude and joy, each moment of each day and night, every practice and every performance?
-Can I face what life throws at me with gratitude,appreciation, and relish, knowing that my growth is dependent on the challenges and resistance that I face?
As wrestlers we elevate one another by challenging each other. Our play and our exchanges revealincongruencies in technique, mindfulness, and conditioning. The experience teaches humility, as we recognize incongruencies and find our way again. Through that process an incredible inner strength and resilience grows.
