Researchers from @tuftsuniversity, @imperialcollege and @uofmichigan have developed a new way to transform silk into a high-performance solid material. The process preserves the natural strength of silk fibres while avoiding synthetic additives and energy-intensive chemical treatments. The resulting material approaches the tensile toughness of Kevlar and outperforms natural materials such as wood and bone.

Published in Nature Sustainability, the research introduces a simpler manufacturing method that keeps the original silk fibre structure intact. Conventional silk processing often dissolves the fibres into proteins before reshaping them into new forms. This step weakens the material and requires large amounts of water, chemicals and energy. The new method avoids this stage entirely.

Researchers at Finland’s @AaltoUniversity have transformed timber salvaged from a 17th-century shipwreck into textile fibres, creating a seamless knitted dress that combines heritage, material innovation and circular design.

The project centres on the Hahtiperä shipwreck, a cargo vessel dating back to 1684. Workers discovered the wreck beneath a parking area in Oulu, Finland, in 2019. Because only part of the vessel could be preserved, maritime archaeologist Minna Koivikko collaborated with Aalto University researchers to explore alternative uses for the remaining timber.

Koivikko described the project as a way to give the recovered wood a “meaningful second life”. In addition, the team wanted to bring underwater cultural heritage into everyday life through contemporary design.

Dutch infrastructure specialist @JoostenGroep, together with construction company Heijmans and Rijkswaterstaat, is testing a new filtration system that captures tyre wear particles and microplastics from motorway rainwater runoff.

The project focuses on the Eco Roadside Filtration System (ERF), a Dutch-developed solution that filters contaminated rainwater directly at the edge of the road. The system is currently being tested at InnovA58, a sustainable infrastructure test site along the A58 motorway between Eindhoven and Tilburg.

Tyre wear particles are increasingly recognised as a major source of microplastic pollution. As vehicles travel, tiny rubber particles collect on road surfaces. During rainfall, water carries these particles into roadside verges, where they can enter soil and groundwater systems.

Researchers at @mcgillu have developed a new class of bioinspired materials using concepts borrowed from mussels and mistletoe plants. The innovation could support the development of more sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, glues and composite materials.

The study explores how biological systems create strong and complex materials through natural self-assembly. Instead of only studying these mechanisms, the researchers applied them to engineer entirely new synthetic materials in the laboratory.

Dutch start-up @bitbybitboards has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a cutting board made from 100% PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), a biobased polymer produced by microorganisms. The project responds to growing concerns about microplastic pollution caused by conventional plastic cutting boards during daily use.

Founder Wessel Schönekerl developed the idea after previously selling polypropylene cutting boards. He began questioning why such an everyday kitchen product should leave permanent traces of microplastics in food, the human body, and the environment. This led to the creation of BitByBit, a company focused on developing circular alternatives for household products.

Unlike fossil-based plastics, PHA is produced through a natural fermentation process using plant-based sugars or oils. Microorganisms generate the polymer inside their cells, after which the material is extracted and processed into a durable biopolymer suitable for consumer applications.

As the first generation of solar panels reaches the end of its lifespan, efficient recycling becomes increasingly important. Dutch research organisation @TNO.innovation has developed a laser-based recycling technology that could improve how valuable materials are recovered from photovoltaic (PV) panels. The method recovers up to 99% of the silver inside solar panels while using far less energy than current recycling techniques.
