I am excited to reveal the cover of my NEW middle grade novel, MAX AND ELLA, STUCK TOGETHER, which comes out on the 7th MAY in the UK with @nosycrow

Huge thanks to the amazing @marinatenax and @elisabettabarbazza.design for creating another incredible cover and my wonderful editor Zoe Griffiths who kept me calm through my ‘book 2 wobbles’!

MEET MAX… he hadn’t thought about meeting his donor parent until his mums suggested it. After a tough year starting secondary school, his confidence has been knocked and he’s struggling to enjoy the music he used to love. With a charity concert coming up, the last thing Max wants to do is let down his friends. Maybe meeting his donor, Hari, will help him figure out who he wants to be.

MEET ELLA … Hari’s daughter. Hari was a sperm donor before Ella was born. She’s fine with it, but she’s not fine with the idea of sharing him with some other kid she’s never met. With her mum working abroad and her best friend starting a different senior school, Ella’s dealing with enough change already. Now this decision her dad made in his past is messing with her future and she’s not happy.

When Max ends up gatecrashing Ella’s family hiking weekend, things do not go to plan, and they are both pushed to the edge…in more ways than one.

Will they stay stuck, or will they find a way to come together – and the path to their true selves?

I’m passionate about telling stories that focus on unconventional families. My own family inspired my debut novel, THE DOUGHNUT CLUB, but when it comes to donor conception there are endless possible stories to be explored.

MAX AND ELLA, STUCK TOGETHER, at its heart, is a story about identity. Because who you are is never just about DNA. Identity is partly down to the genes we inherit, but also defined by the people around us, the environment we live in and the experiences we have.

This is such a special award, as it not only celebrates the work of debut authors, but also recognises the brilliance of all our editors too – which is so deserved!

The Doughnut Club is a story close to my heart, and I feel lucky to have been able to work with the incredible Zoe Griffiths to make it the best it can be.

From day one, Zoe, and the whole team @nosycrow understood what I was trying say with this book and loved these characters just as much as I did.

Had a lovely evening celebrating the launch of Jo Arnold’s @thelittleliterarysociety beautiful book, The Shipwreck Atlas at @papercatbooks . Illustrated by Philip Harris.

It was wonderful to meet Jo in person finally - along with so many other people I have connected with online over the last couple of years.

Loved chatting with @mini.midnight.reads@educa8wirral @missdorransclassroom and@mrsmoonsroom . I spotted @mrsbrownsbookbox from across the room, but never quite made it over to say hello!

Brilliant Sun, Luminous Moon & Max and Ella (nearly) stuck together on the big bright @schoolreadinglist Best of Summer kidlit list on @bookshop_org_uk ☀️☀️☀️ Hooray!!!

I am very behind on my review posts, so there may be a bit of a flurry over the next few days!

First up, Two is a Crowd, by @cathhowewrites .

This is such a wonderful book.

@cathhowewrites is known for not shying away from tricky subjects and this book is no different, but Cath Howe has such a wonderful way of addressing these themes in an engaging, accessible way which is perfect for the age of the target readership.

Told in the first person, the reader truly feels every bump of the emotional rollercoaster her main character, Hattie, is on. Even when we know she’s being unreasonable at times, we can’t help but feel for her and appreciate where she’s coming from with her reactions to events.

This is the first Cath Howe book I have read - which is something I know I need to fix, so I will definitely be going back to read the others!

🍪🍪 This week, I was tasked with a very important challenge… one which I accepted in the name of ‘science’ and have taken very seriously indeed! 🧐

🍪🍪 I actually think I may have interpreted it incorrectly because logistically 4 bourbons in one go is a little excessive and shouldn’t work! It was however a great way to shut me up!!

YES – they really.

The excitement, engagement and connection I’ve seen from children so far in the author visits I’ve done, as well as the visits and events I have seen of other fabulous authors, is incredible and really does prove what a difference they can make.
