Luke brought his supercharged S2000 back to us last week for a tweak after he fitted a new exhaust and began suffering a misfire.

Pretty soon we discovered that although the exhaust had gained us some power and thus made the car run lean at WOT, this was not the cause of the misfire. The oil seal on cylinder 4 had slipped off and allowed the plug hole to fill with oil! A quick and easy fix.

After a bit of optimisation we ended up at 389bhp, carrying the power all the way to 9k whereas it had previously choked up above 8k. This car has a JDM high comp engine fitted and was heavily knock limited, with some high octane fuel it’d be well north of 400bhp!

Last week this flawlessly prepared Mini competition car was brought to us for a tweak after a decrease in valve size. The car uses the popular BMW K1200 head swap to extract every last horsepower out of the little A Series. Whilst we had it we also set up the flat-shifting feature available within our K6+ ECU’s, which the customer is looking forward to testing on track!

The move from the oversized valves it ran last year back to standard valves was purely due to parts availability, and given the relatively small performance hit, it’s a no brainer to reduce mid-season down time.

WHAT. A. DAY! 🤯🤯🤯

After 2 years of work it has been worth it!

After a bumpy start with a broken transporter from one company, Wayne at @blackwelltransportservices saved the day and even got us to the rolling road slot on time at last minute notice!

It was then time for @emeraldm3d to work their magic.
After taking time to make up custom plug leads to check ignition timing, finding an air leak and making gaskets to fix it, Ollie could finally get cracking on with mapping!
He definitely knows what he's doing as smashed through it!
Before I knew it we were onto power runs, and damn it makes a beautiful sound!! 😍🥵

The end result, 196BHP!! 😲

A quick tuning to dial in flat shifting and it was all over!
Then a steady drive home with a huge grin 😁

I cannot thank Wayne, Dave, Keith and Ollie enough for their help!

We thought we’d give a little snapshot of some of the interesting cars we’ve had on the rollers over the past few months, some more successful than others, in no particular order:

A fantastically finished TVR Cerbera with the flat plane crank AJP engine, although unfortunately this one was rather short lived! It came in for an ECU fit & map but after doing a quick ‘before’ power run on the factory management it started pouring white smoke out, a suspected head gasket failure👎.

Next is a little Alfa Romeo Giulia, it had visited us 18 months prior but made disappointing numbers due to having the VVT unit removed and the cams being left at standard timing. It came back to us once this was refitted and with a bit of wiring and a remap we’d picked up 30lbft across the entire rev range, probably the cheapest 40bhp he’ll ever get!

Then a Porsche 911 3.2 from @valorosouk with an ITB conversion courtesy of @911rennsport. This was one of those rare jobs where there were no problems and we could focus on getting a nice result without any dramas! An especially uncommon event for a Porsche😉.

Another well presented car was a MK2 Golf with the ever popular 1.8T swap. We ran into some potential issues with the actuator which limited the power it could make, but having spent all day chasing various other issues (note the darkness outside the workshop, this was in July!) we decided to leave it for another day. We still got around 240bhp which should be more than enough to enjoy over the summer.

And last but not least was a Ford Capri with the early 70’s style widebody kit, reminiscent of the old touring cars. Laying beneath is the 2.9 BOB engine, the 1.8T of the retro Ford world! Here we had another case of factory fitted parts being removed without the necessary modifications, in this case it was the variable inlet ‘VIS’ unit fitted to the BOB engines. These are crucial for top end power, without it you get a steep drop off in torque from around 4500 onwards and a horrible shaped curve, the owner wasn’t too bothered about peak power figures but we hope to gain another 15-20bhp upon it’s return with the valve refitted.

What a transformation this E-Type has undergone ⬇️
A project that started with our client requesting "let's make it green", evolved into this epic engine upgrade.
From the Series 3 standard producing circa 265bhp
To what you see below :

Now producing 372bhp with the following mods
- Over bore to 6.1ltr from 5.3.
- Stage 1 fast road camshafts.
- Forged high compression JE pistons.
- Custom stainless exhaust system.
- Jenvey downdraft throttle-bodies.
- Stand alone "Emerald" ECU running ignition and fuel injection.

Two lovely Sierra 4x4s in recently, both turbocharged!

The first had some issues with building boost, as you can see in the torque curve, it was very slow to come on. We did all the usual checks for boost leaks, stuck open wastegates etc but couldn’t find anything. In the end we put it down to the ebay special turbos but it still made decent power at 284bhp and 295lbft, more than enough to give some unsuspecting fiestas a run for their money.

The second one was a bit more lively, running some hybrid @turbotechnics turbos on slightly higher boost pressure. Unfortunately it left on the back of a trailer about a mile up the road after a ‘spirited’ test drive knocked loose the fuel pump inside the tank, but is now back up and running and being thoroughly enjoyed.

Had a bit of a rarity on the rollers last month in the form of this B3 Passat. The customer bought the car already converted to the ever popular 20v 1.8T but had some running issues, along with upgrading to a larger turbo.

Unfortunately a fuel supply issue cut the day short but we’re looking forward to seeing it back soon to have the mapping finalised and make some power!

The car is on the dyno!

The civic began the engine running in process yesterday at @emeraldm3d .

it’s great to see it finally back on a dyno and working properly after months of dormancy. The car will begin power runs over the next couple of days and then we will have our first trackday of the year next week!!

Too much has been done to the car over the winter to list, but to give a basic overview:

ENGINE
The car now has a 2.4 litre, K24 Frankenstein Honda engine, with fully forged internals and a @ttsperformance supercharger kit, which utilises a @rotrex_superchargers supercharger. The engine is capable of safely and reliably producing 600bhp!! This makes it one of the most powerful Honda civic trackday cars in the country!

INTAKE & EXHAUST
The car has a k&n cone air filter intake, which is connected to a skunk2 inlet manifold. It then has a tegiwa exhaust manifold and a custom 3” straight through exhaust! And it sounds fucking mint.

TYRES & SUSPENSION
The car sits on @bcracing_uk RM series coilovers, with Nankang AR1 tyres allround

BRAKES
The car has a Brembo big brake kit from a megane r/s at the front, with slotted and grooved discs for maximum brake performance. We run @pbsbrakes pro race pads for their consistent braking feel and great stopping distances!

WEIGHTSAVING AND SAFETY
The car has been fully stripped out in the rear, to save weight and get the car to turn more. It’s also been fitted with an @sw_motorsports half cage, with the full cage being fitted soon. It has sparco race seats, a sabelt 6 point harness for the driver and an OMP 4 point harness for the passenger, and an OMP steering wheel!

That’s just a small overview of what makes our car so unique, and we can’t wait to show it off on track soon!

A massive thank you to everybody who has put so much time and effort into making the car what it is today 🙏🙏

The Ultima GTR
Area31 has been full on with this one!

Customer stated poor running on the racetrack, starting with the vehicle unable to exceed 150mph, then unable to exceed 120mph.
Once the vehicle arrived with us it was then struggling to even start

It was a fuelling problem we solved with Uprated fuel pumps, fuel system service and a recalibration of the carburettor.
Following an engine service, brake upgrades and full bolt check we reached out to our friends @emeraldm3d who we thank in helping us test our work to a prove healthy 450hp and 173mph!

With this weapon now ready for the track again, the owner also wanted many other aspects completed including:

Wheels refurbished beautifully by @warmanwheels in Lamborghini racing bronze

Interior re carpeted, seats repaired and padded with
Schroth 6 point harnesses

Full coolant system hoses re clamped with stainless steel superclamps

Exhaust manifold heat wrapped

Clamshell/ chassis strengthening and bodywork realigned

Headlights adjusted, polycarbonate lenses polished and re sealed

Original mdf wooden front splitter scrapped and abs durable plastic made in house

Fully road legal and MOT passed ✅

Had a lovely Dolomite Sprint in last week for mapping and was pleasantly surprised by a distinct lack of issues!

These were the first mass production car to utilise a 4 valve per cylinder lay out, although still using a single cam with an interesting ‘hybrid’ set up where the cam is mounted directly over the intake valves using conventional tappets (like that of a dohc head) but using rocker arms to actuate the exhaust valves in place of a second cam.

This engine wasn’t built for maximum power and even retained the factory cast exhaust manifold but still had a healthy bump from a claimed ~130bhp factory to 170bhp and 153lbft with help from a set of @jenveydynamics throttle bodies and a camshaft from @kentcams.

Not something we usually do but @area31industries brought this Ultima GTR to us this week for a bit of diagnostics and a power run. The car is still on a carb and MSD distributor set up and had been running into fuel starvation issues after long stints of full throttle, but this seems to have been fixed with a few maintenance items. Although we wouldn’t normally take on work like this, troubleshooting problems like this on the road is often very difficult and can get rather dicey so the rolling road makes the perfect test bed.
