Two weeks ago, we gathered at The Nest in Oxford to hold space for conversations that are too often separated: climate collapse, ecocide, settler colonialism, war, displacement, and liberation.

Together, with our amazing panel Harpreet Kaur-Spannos, Damien Gayle, Taghrid Choucair-Vizoso, and Mateo Adarve Zuluaga, facilitated by Suzanne Dhaliwal, we reflected on the reality that environmental destruction does not happen in isolation from war and militarisation.

As Oxfam has shown through its climate justice work, where conflict drives ecological breakdown through emissions, land contamination, and the destruction of ecosystems, while the climate crisis in turn deepens inequality and can fuel further instability over land, water, and food.

From extractive industries to militarised borders, from land theft to forced displacement, the climate crisis is deeply entangled with systems of occupation, violence, and racial capitalism. Communities living through war and colonialism are also living through ecological devastation.

Through collective dialogue, zine-making, storytelling, music, and shared reflection, we explored the role of cultural heritage within movements for climate justice and how memory, language, art, food, and storytelling become forms of resistance against erasure. In the face of occupation, war, and environmental destruction, cultural practices carry histories and ways of living that systems of power attempt to displace or destroy.

Climate justice is not only about protecting land, but also about protecting the relationships, identities, and collective memories rooted within it. Holding these conversations at The Nest felt especially important. It created space for honesty, creativity, political reflection, and collective care at a time when spaces like this feel deeply needed.

The evening closed with a moving performance by Kareem Samara, dedicated to the memory of Aisha Younis, grounding us in grief, remembrance, and collective presence.

You can read some deeper reflections over on the Climate Reframe Substack written by @thediyora ✍️

Last Thursday, almost 100 of us gathered at The Nest in Oxford for a day rooted in conversation, creativity, music, and collective reflection. 🌀

Co-hosted by Climate Reframe and Oxfam, @ywmpoxfordthe event brought together activists, organisers, artists, journalists, and community members to explore how climate justice is deeply connected to struggles for racial justice, economic justice, and collective liberation. Special shout out to @cowleycollect 🤟🏽

We began the day with a collaborative zine-making workshop led by Lillie Aissa, Reem Daas, and Sawasan Motaz, creating a much needed space to slow down, connect, and creatively reflect on environmental justice through collage, storytelling, and shared conversation. 🪡

The evening panel featured powerful contributions from Harpreet Kaur-Spannos (Greenpeace), Damien Gayle (The Guardian), Taghrid Choucair-Vizoso (Julie’s Bicycle / White Kite Collective), and Mateo Adarve Zuluaga (Oxfam), facilitated by Suzanne Dhaliwal. Together, we explored the intersections between climate, colonialism, displacement, and ongoing global struggles, this is a deep conversation which we sure will continue…

We then closed the evening with a beautiful live performance from Kareem Samara, whose oud music, field recordings, and storytelling created a deeply moving atmosphere that carried us into the final hours of connection with delicious food from Zaater Bake. The performance was dedicated to the memory of Aisha Younis and we appreciate everyone who shared reflections on your connection with her over the day. 🩷

Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed, listened, shared, and helped shape such a thoughtful and energising space. Here’s a look back at some moments from the evening and stay tuned for more reflections!

We are happy to announce that Harpreet Kaur-Spannos from Greenpeace, Damien Gayle, Environmental Correspondent at The Guardian andTaghrid Choucair-Vizoso, Julie’s Bicycle + White Kite Collective will make up our panel, which will be facilitated by Suzanne Dhaliwal at the Nest in Oxford 📣

We have put together a panel for you that we hope will help us zoom out a little and deepen our understanding of how ecocide, settler colonialism and war are connected with the climate crisis. Many of you are also experts and have lived experience in this and so being able to think and reflect together we hope will support us on the long road to climate justice.

There will be food from our friends at Zaatar Bake, their space has been our favourite place to meet with partners to plan and invite the local community into the conversation. 🤝🏾

Stay tuned, because we will have more information about a very exciting musical guest and an afternoon creative workshop very soon…We can’t wait to see you IRL!

Please share the invitation with people who you think can benefit from the space and sign up now! 💚

In January, we held our community gathering at the Stuart Hall Library to celebrate Present Land and the work that emerged from the project. 😍

Present Land is a community art project based in Westminster that explores climate justice through creative collaboration. Over four participatory workshops hosted at the Grand Junction, local residents worked with our selected artist, Maymana Arefin, to reflect on environmental issues and share strategies for sustainable action.

Prioritising youth (16-25) and older adults (65+), the project proposed intergenerational dialogue while addressing social isolation and climate inequality. Community members helped shape the programme and presented their work during the final gathering.

Resources developed will be shared online at a later date, expanding public access and long-term impact.

Thank you Maymana @fungi.futures , for your incredible work on this project, and thank you to everyone who joined us in the workshops and the gathering! 🌱💓

Starting the year with the Shifting Cultures Festival 🎨

Last Thursday, we had the chance to spend the day at the Shifting Cultures Festival, hosted by @comicrelief and Shifting the Power and the Power of Pop Fund. It was such a welcome reminder of how energising it is to gather in person with people working at the intersection of culture, storytelling, and social change.

Beyond the panels and workshops, what really stayed with us was the atmosphere, comedy, live music, so much good food, and the kind of conversations that spill out into hallways and linger long after the programme ends.

It was especially lovely to connect with folks from Climate Reframe and partner organisations, and to share ideas with artists, strategists, and organisers thinking deeply about how culture can shift narratives and create real impact in the year ahead.

I left feeling inspired and grateful for the gentle easing back into the year and very well fed. More spaces like this, please!

Don’t forget to sign up to our Substack and stay in touch!substack.com/@climatereframe 💜 link in bio
