Bakey: Paying โTributeโ
After becoming the first artist to sign to Warehouse Projectโs new label @whp_records earlier this year, Bakey has released his debut full length album Tribute. He has risen quickly through the UK underground dance scene with a steady run of dancefloor rumbling singles and collaborations, but Tribute marks his first attempt at building a full project.
As he puts it, โI hadnโt really thought about doing an album until I made a tune that kind of sounded like it should be on an album. I started it about two years ago and I just thought Iโd try and give it a go, and write tunes to kind of fit as one, you know.โ
Bakeyโs sound has always been a blend of the different building blocks that make up UK bass music, and Tribute continues that approach but in a way that he describes as โaccessible.โ
โThe album is inspired by that 2010s era of dance music, and even the sounds from before then that I was too young to rave to.โ
The album opens with a spoken word intro from Sgt. Pokes and includes an interlude from Capo Lee. MCs play a big role across the project, something Bakey was keen to honour:
โIโve always had a big love for rap and grime. I got Capo on the album as well, doing an interlude, because I feel like that was another big part of me being shaped as an artist, him sort of helping me out and inspiring me to do stuff like that. I wanted to make sure he was a part of it. I feel like MCs are quite an important part of sound system music in general.โ
To celebrate the release, I spoke with @bakey_____ about the sounds and artists that helped shape Tribute, from the value of bringing in voices like Capo Lee and Sgt. Pokes to what he has learnt from peers such as Dismantle, and even sampling the final Kool FM broadcast.
โI think itโs important to make sure youโre paying respect rather than just sort of copying or taking from others.โ

Name: @bakey_____ ๐
Where Heโs From: London-born, Bristol-based
When He Started: โI used to mess about on GarageBand when I was, like, 10 or 11โnothing serious, just seeing what I could make. Then, towards the end of secondary school, around 16 or 17, I started taking it a bit more seriously. Iโd spend time in the music lab after lessons making beats. Thatโs probably when I realised it was something I properly wanted to do.โ
Genre: Garage/Bass/Breaks
File Next To: Main Phase, Special Request, Y U QT
Sounds Like: โMy sound takes bits from different corners of UK dance musicโmainly garage, breaks, and drum & bass. Itโs pretty bass-heavy and rhythm-led, which probably comes from me playing drums before I got into producing. Thereโs definitely that soundsystem influence too, especially in how the low-end moves. Some tunes have a slightly more soulful side in the melodics, but itโs subtleโjust enough to balance things out, Iโd say.โ
First Music That Inspired Him: โItโs hard to pick one track that got me into making dance music. A lot of the More Than A Lot stuff from Chase & Status definitely played a part; those tunes just had something about them that made me want to mess around and see how it all worked. I remember my older brother playing me โLKโ by DJ Marky, XRS & Stamina MC too, and that one really stuck with meโa proper eye-opener.โ
Possessed with a voracious appetite for music almost from birth, UK producer Bakeyโs youth was spent soaking up funk and soul classics from his parentsโ stereo. โStevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Bill Withers, Earth, Wind & Fireโall that,โ he tells TRENCH. โThatโs the kind of stuff that was playing at home when I was a kid. I think it definitely played a part in me wanting to make music, even if you wouldnโt really hear it in what I make now.โ In the immediate sense, he might be right, but the idea of making music to be felt on a physical level is a definite throughline to the low-end speaker shakers he specialises in today...

โCapo Interludeโ
Wanted a moment on the album to give Capo space to bar over something heโs into, but maybe less known for currently. Heโs always been a big influence on me, even before we started making music together, so it felt right. Feels like a nice bridge between the two sides of the record.
Really appreciate all the love Iโve received so far on Tribute.

โTributeโ, my first ever LP, releases today via @whp_records
Canโt tell you how surreal it is to finally have this project out there โ feels like Iโve been working on it forever.
The album sums up the sounds and era of dance music that have had a huge impact on me as a producer โ the ones I was too young to catch first-hand in clubs, but still take endless inspiration from and pay tribute to. Having Sgt Pokes, Capo, and B-ahwe feature just felt right, tapping into each pocket of music I love.
Massive thank you to everyone involved in making it happen โ couldnโt have asked for a better team to bring it to life.

After becoming the first artist to sign to @whp_mcrโ new record label, @bakey_____ is soon to release his first full-length project, moving into different sonic territories after seven years making and performing music.
โTributeโ pays homage to 2010s dance music โ with emotional synths, terrace-ready grooves and an emphasis on vocals added to his arsenal โ joining nods to soundsystem culture, early pirate radio stations, and the raves that shaped him.
In his own words, itโs the โpurest reflection of who I am as a producerโ right now, encapsulating a lot of the shifting sounds heโs moving towards โ melodic and downtempo at points, but still calling back to those signature bass cuts.
โAll my music is inspired by that 2010s era of dance music, and even before that. This album felt like a continuation of what Iโm trying to do, itโs always been that. Itโs trying to show respect and take inspiration from, but not copy.โ
Bakey also delivers a new mix featuring unreleased music, and talks about breaking out of his bubble, sampling the last-ever pirate broadcast on @koolfmofficial before its relaunch, and working with his brother, Breaka.
