Reba Maybury
I Come in Peace
6.3. – 31.5.2026

How do you dominate Gustav Klimt?
This was one of the first questions Reba Maybury posed while preparing her exhibition I Come in Peace. Maybury is an artist, writer, and political dominatrix whose multidisciplinary practice interrogates the intersections of feminism, sexuality, labour, and power. Her exhibition unfolds over four sites – across the building’s façade, in the foyer, upstairs in the Grafisches Kabinett, and in the Beethoven Frieze space. The artist conceived a site-responsive project, not only in terms of its architectural interventions but also in its engagement with the institution’s history.

Programmed by the board of the Secession
Curated by Haris Giannouras

The exhibition was supported by the Danish Arts Foundation and the Fake Foundation.
Special thanks to Company Gallery and Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi.

Marianna Simnett
Circus
6.3. – 31.5.2026

At the Secession, Marianna Simnett presents Circus, a multimedia exhibition comprising light, sound, and sculptural works that draw on her Yugoslav heritage. Personal references, including a work that was inspired by her Jewish-Croatian grandfather’s experience during the Holocaust, intersect with nods to folkloric bogeywomen, who may interchangeably figure as threat or ally, and the traditional Balkan skirt that stages the delicate play of revealing and concealing intimate body parts. The show’s Circus theme manifests itself in a variety of ways throughout the presentation: in the maniacal spinning of a skirt overhead, alluding to a circus tent; in a stage for a performance; in the sound of torturous laughter; or in dazzling lights illuminating a darkened space.

Programmed by the board of the Secession
Curated by Bettina Spörr

The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Simona Petrova-Vassileva.

Ndidi Dike
Rare Earth Rare Justice
6.3. – 31.5.2026

The exhibition unfolds as a large-scale installation structured around absence, death, and mourning. Suspended from the ceiling, a monumental sculpture composed of approximately nine hundred autopsy neck rests forms a bullet-like shape facing a large circular mirror. The object evokes both the lethal economies of extraction and historical loading plans of slave ship plans, in which enslaved bodies were densely packed into cargo holds, pointing to the continuities of brutality against and commodification of Black bodies. Rather than depicting violence directly, the work activates memory and imagination, allowing associations to emerge in the minds of viewers.

Programmed by the board of the Secession
Curated by Jeanette Pacher

Rare Earth Rare Justice was developed by Ndidi Dike in close collaboration with the Secession. Further adapted chapters will be presented at Färgfabriken, Stockholm, in 2026 and at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, in 2027. The new body of work was co-commissioned by the three partners.

Support from the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and its Dialogue Residency programme have enabled the artist to refine her exhibition and discuss it with audiences on site in Vienna.

A new podcast episode with Reba Maybury and Haris Giannouras is out!

For her solo exhibition at Secession Maybury worked on a new body of work that engages directly with the misogynistic histories of the institution, confronting Klimt as a figure entrenched in privilege and power, a classical prototype of male artistic genius. In her practice the artist interrogates the intersections of feminism, sexuality, and power. Their discussion touches on the new works produced for the exhibition while addressing issues of punk, sex, labour, and the gendered side of power.

Available on our website, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.

Opening next week: “Vienna–Copenhagen” Den Frie Udstilling 2026

This year, the artists’ association Den Frie Udstilling have invited their colleagues from the sister institution, Wiener Secession, to participate as guest exhibitors in their annual exhibition.

Like Den Frie, the Vienna Secession was founded in the 1890s, and the two institutions remain among the few exhibition venues in Europe still housed and run by artists. As is the case of Den Frie Udstilling, Wiener Secession also counts some of the country’s most prominent artists among its members.

The exhibition brings together 45 artists from Den Frie Udstilling in dialogue with 125 Austrian colleagues from Wiener Secession in an energetic display that highlights the potential of collective formats and collegial exchange.

“Vienna–Copenhagen” Den Frie Udstilling 2026 is organised by Kristoffer Akselbo and Henrik Plenge Jakobsen from Den Frie Udstilling, and Sofie Thorsen, Michael Part and Jun Yang from Wiener Secession, assisted by Clemens Battisti.

Listen to the latest episode of Secession Podcast Members: Ndidi Dike in conversation with Jeanette Pacher

Ndidi Dike’s exhibition Rare Earth Rare Justice unfolds as a large-scale installation structured around absence, death, and mourning and was developed over a year by the artist in close collaboration with Secession’s tech and curatorial team. Thanks to a “Dialogue Residency” supported by the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the artist was able to spend two months in Vienna, working in detail on the elements of the installation and the accompanying publication.
The extended stay also allowed the artist to reflect on the work and experience how visitors would interact with it once the exhibition had opened. Further chapters will be presented at Färgfabriken, Stockholm and Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, Warsaw. Towards the end of the residency, Ndidi Dike and Jeanette Pacher recorded this podcast as part of an ongoing conversation between the artist and the curator.

Spring greetings from above the city

High on the rooftop of the Vienna Secession, our busy bees are back at work—collecting nectar, pollinating, and bringing a little more life to the urban landscape.

We’re proud to share that our very own honey, crafted right here in the heart of Vienna, is available in the museum shop.

A special thank you to our dedicated beekeeper and team member, Hans Weinberger, who cares for our rooftop colony with passion and expertise.

Listen to the latest episode of Secession Podcast Members: Hans Schabus in conversation with Kathrin Rhomberg

The artist Hans Schabus, who has exhibited twice at the Secession and served on its board, and the long-standing curator Kathrin Rhomberg discuss the Secession as a point of reference for their own work, the significance of the confrontational, provocative energy of art as a site of action, and the exhibition venue as a place that enables the immediate experience of this force. They also speak about Schabus’s 1996 exhibition in the Graphic Cabinet, which he extended into the Ver Sacrum Room below and—by boarding up the windows of both rooms on the façade—connected visibly to the outside, as well as his now legendary exhibition Astronaut (Komme gleich), in which he bricked up the entrance to the main hall in 2003.
