Si siedono lì, sull’erba, i ragazzi.
A stare distesi così, le siepi sembrano enormi.
Lei sistema gli occhiali e non dice niente.
Guarda il blu sul collo del pavone.
È sicura di averlo già visto. Non il pavone, il blu.

“Ci sta guardando?”
Il pavone è lì a un metro, fermo.
Non è curioso, non è agitato. È lì e basta.
La coda si apre appena, piena di occhi.

“Saremo degni di stare nel suo giardino?”

In fondo, verso la villa, altri due camminano piano.

With Earth Day upon us, we revisit a Hoosierist from August of 2025, where we touched on the amount of unspoiled land that remains in Indiana. According to the Department of Natural Resources, of Indiana’s original 20 million acres of forest, only about 2,000 remain.
