The beauty of Gyun Hur’s installation “Our mothers, our water, our peace” and her reflections on the intersection of her personal and creative journeys are shared in our newest Flux Film by Proper Medium (@propermedium ).

“Our mothers, our water, our peace” was created in response to the rise in anti-Asian violence during the pandemic and the tragic 2021 Atlanta spa shootings. Hur’s response was a project that spoke to universal themes of loss, remembrance, and the ongoing search for belonging. After a year of community outreach and engagement, the project culminated in a two-week installation at the Goat Farm (@thegoatfarm )this past March. The result was breathtaking!

For fifteen years, Proper Medium has captured the magic of our ephemeral work. Blake Williams recognized—even before we did—film would be critical to documenting our projects. The vision for the Flux Film series was his, and we remain deeply grateful to him and his team for their artistry and ongoing collaboration.

Remember when. . .
In 2011, Gyun Hur created her first commission with Flux Projects, Spring Hiatus, a 30’ x 16’ installation on the floor at Lenox Square mall. The project continued Hur’s exploration of the ephemeral nature of beauty and life through installations of hand-shredded silk flowers carefully arranged into immaculate, streamlined patterns. The deconstructed flowers inspired recollections of her past and ties to Korea and her family. Carefully laid on the floor without any adhesive, the shredded flowers replicated Hur’s mother’s wedding blanket. The vulnerability and ephemerality of the brightly colored lines reflect ideas of loss, cultural identity and assimilation, and memory. @gyunhurstudio @lenoxsqmall
