The Busan Biennale 2024 @busanbiennale opened a couple of nights ago I’m super happy to premiere a new video installation: BAN🤍ITS. It engages a washed up group of ‘socio-political’ bandits who farcically re-enact a past heist. There are party vibes, banging tunes, and bandit philosophy. Out near the porous, lawless eastern border between Bangladesh and India, a diasporic artist returns to make works with a band of washed up ban🤍its who are obsessed with Heath Ledger’s Joker. As they comically re-enact their glorified past, we confront the divergent histories and philosophies of peasant banditry and political resistance and its unexpected causes and contexts. The resulting installation encompasses a moving-image work on a LED video wall installed in a large village party pavilion. The resulting para-fiction questions its authorship and morality and asks: when the art world comes calling, who are the real ban🤍its?

JANUS TUSSLE (BE PREMIÈRE) 24 min., 16:9, colour, stereo, in English and Bengali. By Omar A. Chowdhury. Starring Sadia Rahman, Kateryna Don, Muhammed Anwar Hossain

Elusive and unreliable, the film Janus Tussle follows the aftermath of a failed antiques trade between Bangladesh and Paris in 2008. Two shadowy sources recount protests by angry activists, priceless works stolen and dumped by treasure-hunting baggage crusaders, the resignation of the culture minister and the unfortunate death of a young diplomat. The fictional documentary unravels and complicates concepts of exchange, trust and shifting power relations. What remains is the mystery around a multipolar situation, still cursed by an unjust, traumatic past.
Commissioned by the British Council and Arts Council England.
