First up, "Thresholds" at Detroit Artists Market, organized by Kate Tremel, Hayden Richer, and Rachel Heibel. Thresholds is a design-focused ceramic exhibition that positions ceramic furniture as a critical mediator in the dialogue between the volume of the human body and architectural space. Next, "Body Shop" at Scarab Club, organized by Qwist Joseph and Christina A. West. Body Shop artists explore contemporary interpretations of the human body and its relationship to clay, inviting viewers to reconsider ideas of repair, beautification, and the deep interconnectedness of human experience. And finally, "Outpour" at Gallerie Camille, organized by Carly "Car" Riegger, Molly Green, and Sorrel Stone.Outpour is a figurative exhibition by artists with disabilities exploring the body as a vessel and container. NCECA’s Featured Exhibitions program brings ceramic art into the communities that host the annual conference, expanding visibility and access across a range of venues. The Featured Exhibitions program offers a dynamic platform for diverse artists to connect with regional, national, and international audiences. Artists and curators from the US and abroad are invited to submit proposals for consideration by the July 8 deadline.

NCECA's Exhibitions Director, Adam Chau, will chair a panel to review and select proposals in collaboration with members of the Baltimore region’s arts and culture community.

Coming Soon: Clay Around Town Exhibition Listings
Later this spring, NCECA will open submissions for Clay Around Town, a listing opportunity for organizers who already have venue partnerships within the Baltimore region. These exhibitions will help connect local and visiting audiences with even more ceramic art experiences throughout the city.

Clay Around Town is an open call: all complete proposals submitted by the deadline and aligned with NCECA’s goals and guidelines will be eligible for inclusion. Listings will be free for NCECA members. Non-members may join NCECA or pay a listing fee to participate.

The call for submissions for the 2027 NCECA Belonging – Representation in Clay exhibition is now open! Previously known as the NCECA Multicultural Fellowship Exhibition, this iteration expands outside of the Multicultural Fellowship to platform artists who self-identify as marginalized. The exhibition brings together voices working across ceramics and interdisciplinary practices, emphasizing the role of clay in articulating identity, cultural histories, and systems of knowledge. This exhibition reflects the ongoing impact of the Multicultural Fellowship and its influence on the field of ceramics. The exhibition accepts a range of generations, geographies, and material approaches. The works demonstrate how clay, alongside other media, is used to examine personal and collective narratives, engage community, and contribute to broader conversations in contemporary art.

NCECA acknowledges and gives thanks to Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, curator of the 2022 NCECA Annual, Belonging – Representation in Clay. We are honored to extend the life of this universal and powerful concept through this recurring exhibition series.

The call for submissions for the 2027 NCECA Annual Exhibition, Throw/Back, is now open! The exhibition’s title is a play on the verb most often applied to forming vessels on the potters wheel and an acknowledgment of the vast and diverse history of ceramics that inspires so many contemporary makers. As art historians of Asia and the Ancient Americas, curators Adriana Proser and Ellen Hoobler are interested in how ceramic forms endure and persist but also may undergo radical shifts in a relatively brief time. Even in the face of unimaginable personal or historical ruptures and traumas, and in times of relative stability, ceramics carry culture and meaning across centuries.

The collections of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore include thousands of artworks, from around the world and across the centuries. Throw/Back represents an extraordinary opportunity for contemporary ceramic artists to reflect on the past, engage with the present, and envision the future.

Conversation with Susan Low-Beer and Suzanne Thomson about Transformation by Fire, moderated by Jasmine Baetz.

Transformation by Fire, a 10-year retrospective, originated by the Gardiner Museum in partnership with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, addressed issues of violence against women. Working together, the museum and clinic organized annual psychotherapeutic clay groups for women and gender diverse people who have experienced violence. The exhibition featured approximately 30 sculptures created during annual group sessions from 2003 to 2013 in the Gardiner Museum’s clay studios, led by ceramic artist Susan Low-Beer and registered psychotherapist and art therapist Suzanne Thomson.

Transformation by Fire drew on works that explore themes of Hope and Resilience, Metamorphosis, Mind and Body, and Sanctuary and Shelter. Personal statements and short videos featuring participating artists enriched viewers' experiences. This retrospective won the 2013 OMA Award of Excellence in Exhibition, illustrating the uniquely therapeutic qualities of clay.

As we prepare to welcome thousands of artists from around the country next year through our exhibitions and programming, meet the local partners and ceramic organizations that make this all possible!
