I was very fortunate to spend the past two weeks as an artist-in-residence for the Iron Light cast iron residency program at the Western North Carolina Sculpture Park @wncsculpture in the Happy Valley near Lenoir, NC surrounded by tremendously hardworking and positive humans amidst a beautiful mountainous landscape. Massive thanks to WNC director Joe Bigley @josephbigley.artist, studio manager Amanda Szot @amanda.szot, education coordinator Emma Finnen @spacey_aquarius, visiting artist Matt Mroz @mrozsculpture who traveled from Michigan to run the furnace; plus the hardworking interns Oliver, Matty, Tyler, Abby, Zach and my fellow AIRs Kristen Tordella-Williams @kristentordellawilliams, Jenny Hillenbrand @jennyhillenbrand, Rose von Muchow @rose______v , Ryan Van Der Hout @r_vanderhout , Molly Harrington @mollyharringtonstudios , and Scott Kamlah @scott_kamlah .

In two weeks we created 200 molds with 17,000 pounds of sand and cast over 4000 pounds of iron in two iron pours within 48 hours. It was an exhausting and exhilarating experience and I’m grateful for every day of it. I was able to complete a new cast iron sculpture “Cleave” and install it in the WNC sculpture park where it will be on view for the next few years. I highly recommend this residency and creative community to sculptors. In just three years, the volunteer staff of WNC Sculpture has installed over 80 sculptures in the meadows and forests, built a well-equipped studio shop, and hosted at least three annual iron pours since 2019.

The 7 Iron Light artists traveled to North Carolina from New York, Arizona, Alabama, Minnesota, Connecticut, and Tennessee.
