this edition of framework:afield has been produced in estonia, with recordings made in india, by paul beaudoin. for more of his work see https://paulbeaudoin.net. producer's notes:
These sounds were recorded while I was an artist-in-residence at the Alice Boner Institute in Varanasi.
I begin at Assi Ghat, the southernmost ghat along the Ganges River. Devotion and daily life occupy the same steps. Pilgrims descend to the water while vendors prepare tea. Motorbikes screech in front of temple walls. Loudspeakers test microphones. Silence is impossible inside these narrow gullies.
At five in the morning, a woman begins to ring a bell. She will chant continuously for more than two hours. Her voice does not rise above the city. It threads through it. Morning traffic grows. Street dogs growl and fight as river boats move alongside the banks.
Later, at the Shri Durga Mandir, a small group of musicians chant in an open courtyard. Their rhythm remains steady while birds cut across the sound field. Human and nonhuman sounds sharing the same space, blissfully.
By evening, the aarti at Assi Ghat gathers fire, bells, amplified speech, recorded music, and water into a single dense field. No element dominates. Each sound persists beside the others. Incense drifts through the air as voices cry out, Har Har Mahadev. - paul beaudoin, 2026.05
Paul Beaudoin is an interdisciplinary artist and composer based in Tallinn, Estonia. His work moves fluidly across experimental music, photography, video, text, and installation, often integrating these forms into large-scale conceptual projects. Internationally recognized for his quiet, perceptually focused compositions and visually destabilized photographic works, he examines memory, embodiment, and queer identity through structural restraint and material sensitivity.
He holds a PhD in music theory and composition from […]

i've always tried to keep framework radio and murmer as independent projects, and i've always attempted to avoid the trap of using framework to overly-promote my own artistic activities. but guess what? i have a new album out! and it's made from field recordings! i get to play my own new releases on the show too, right? it happens so rarely that it doesn't feel to me like an abuse of position. besides, there's no one here to reprimand me, so you'll just have to put up with it.
patrick quinn in nyc has launched a new label, called deep mapping, and he invited me to contribute a work for it. i took the opportunity to finally work with the sounds i recorded during the making of the film 'the mill' in 2018, and the result is 'mill:liminal', a sonic companion to the film, which can now also be seen in full here:
https://murmerings.com/themill
we also listening to patrick's own release from the label, in collaboration with precious moon, which is a sort of psychogeographic mapping of a "living" ghost town in west virginia. also on the label so far are works by sam boston and our old friend goh lee kwang, which we hope to also get to at a later date.
we also checked out the latest release on the great gruenrekorder, a portrait of a wetland in silesia in the czech republic that features field recordings and re-interpretations by and collaborations with several other artists; and a new one on line by verónica cerrotta featuring abstractions of sonic journeys in europe and south america. all this along with our latest batch of listener chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps, and a framework introduction from slovakia, our first of many (we hope) out of our recent visit there for the LOM field […]

this week we conclude for this year our look back at some classic editions of framework:afield, never before online and not heard since their initial broadcasts almost 20 years ago. this week, an edition produced by japanese native longtime u.s. resident musician, marcos fernandes. titled 'ready for the revolution', it originally aired on september 6th, 2006. for more of his work, see marcosfernandes.com.
the piece has subsequently also been released on marcos' bandcamp page, and can be found here:
https://marcosfernandes.bandcamp.com/album/ready-for-the-revolution
here are some notes from the release:
RFTR examines the dissenting voices of activism in America following the re-election of George W. Bush in November 2004 and comprises field recordings made at various peace marches and anti-war rallies in San Diego between 2004 and 2005.
The phonographs were recorded on a portable DAT machine. The piece was mixed and recorded in real time using three CD players and a digital effects unit without any overdubs or edits. The 56 minute piece was divided into five sections in accordance with this platform’s guidelines.

i will keep it brief here, as i'm in an airport, flying back home from @lom.space 's wonderful #fieldrecordingmeetup2026 in bratislava, where i was able to spend time with @danokordik , #izabeladłużyk #tomáššenkyřík , #jonasgruska ( mr. LOM himself), and many others. i gave a talk on the history and strategy of framework radio to an audience largely unfamiliar with the show, and will hopefully soon be receiving a large influx of framework introductions and field recording submissions from slovakia. i'm looking at you, richard! peter! paul! hopefully you're reading this...
meanwhile, i mixed this show before i left, and i'm looking forward to listening to it myself along this journey. i'll think you'll like it - new sounds from taiwan, greece, the uk, and the us, along with recent listener chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps, and a rare framework introduction recording by your intrepid host, me.
again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

this is our last show before our annual spring break - just a brief one to do some yard work and tune up the bikes for the season - but also to plan our participation in the LOM field recording meetup, happening in bratislava on may 3rd! if you're in town or able to be, do stop by and say hello! i'll be giving a talk on the history and philosophy and framework radio, and in the evening i'll be hosting a listening salon and discussion from my own field recording archives. for more information or tickets, see here:
https://frm2026.lom.audio/
we'll be back with edition 970 on that same day - in the meantime, this is a good one, with sounds of everyday parisien life by roberto vodanović čopor; polish nature with gentle instrumental accompaniment by izabela dłużyk; sounds of the four basic elements inspired by the ancient greeks by patrick quinn; and free roaming around lisbon in an encounter between movement and place by manja ristić. also, our latest selection of listener-chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps, and a great drilling intro from a parking garage under renovation on toronto by james bailey.

some serious pronunciation research had to be done this week - a hidden aspect of framework radio production that many of you may not be aware of: bosque vacio, ein träumendes pferd, maciejs wirmański and janasik - a certain amount of confidence going into matilde meireles and collettivocromocinque, but hang on, might as well double check just to be certain...
this week: an exploration or the aural relationships between the lacandon people of chiapas, mexico and the birds of their jungle; heavily processed sounds of horses, whispering twigs and ice on a frozen lake; field recordings from the rockefeller prairie in kansas paired with instrumental improvisations; and sounds of and around a drifting floating pavilion in northern ireland. also, recent listener-chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps recorded in the u.s., poland, and italy; and a framework introduction also recorded for us in the united states.

This week we pay special tribute to the life and work of the pioneering composer éliane radigue, who passed away in paris on the 23rd of february at the age of 94.
i can't overstate the extent of radigue's importance and influence to the world of experimental music and experimental musicians globally, and while framework is ostensibly focused on field recordings, we chose to stretch our arms a bit wider for this show, as her influence on our world can also not be denied. in this edition though we will subtly focus on works that may relate, however slightly, to field recording - especially her piece 'elemental 1' from 1968, which is composed explicitly from sounds and feedback of air, water, earth and fire; but also her work with spoken word and voice, and her pre-synthesizer works for pure feedback, a type of field recording in itself, perhaps. there is plenty of information about the artist and her work online; i encourage you to search for it and explore. there are some links below to get you started, but i won't say too much more here - i'd prefer to leave you with her sounds.
there are, however, scattered throughout those sounds in this edition, a few words and observations written by longtime friend of the program emmanuel holterbach, who spent many years working with éliane to digitize her archives and is intimately familiar with her work. he also made the beautiful mixes of her early 'vice-versa, etc' piece, originally a 1970 multiple of 10 copies on 2 reel to reel tapes, that appear on the 'feedback works 1969-1970' release, one of which is in our mix. many thanks to manu for his expertise and his contribution to our appreciation and knowledge of radigue's work.

first, we would like to welcome a new station to the framework family: harrowgate community radio is A 6-year-old independent radio project based in the uk, and now airs framework at 18:00 on wednesdays, repeated the following day at 10:00. check them out here: https://harrogatecommunityradio.online. welcome to the fold, hcr!
second, a pronunciation apology: i mistakenly credited sem zeeman in this edition as sam - foolish, as we are familar with sem's work, and this is not the first time he's been on the program. sorry, sem!
and finally, i would like to acknowledge again the sad news that our community has lost another great: éliane radigue has passed away, in paris, at the age of 94. where would any of us be without éliane and her music? somewhere in all the outpourings of grief and tribute over this last week or so, i read that she once said of her own work, "i always make the same music." i, for one, am heartbroken that we won't be hearing any more new same music from her skilled hands.
the news came to me too late to include her in this show, and anyway i wanted to be able to take time with our tribute here at framework. no one will pretend that her work had a strong field recording element in it, but frankly, i don't care. edition 965, our next regular edition slot, will be in honor of her life and work.
in this edition great sounds from old friend richard francis; finally, a proper dose of the radiophonic work of chloé despax (whose aporee contributions have featured on the program over many years); a new album of collaborative works from fletina; short works from daniel ottini and sem zeeman; recent listener-chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps from belgium, uk, equador and poland; and a framework introduction recorded by long-time contributor martin clarke while recording dog-sledding in norway.

this week we begin another look back at some classic editions of framework:afield, never before online and not heard since their initial broadcasts almost 20 years ago. we begin with an edition produced in portland, oregon by seth nehil, originally aired on july 12th, 2006, edition #121. for more of seth's work see https://sethnehil.net. you can find his notes with the playlist below.
Seth Nehil - Notes for Afield
1:23 The first track is from an album with John Grzinich called gyre. This work was created during my post-grad school visit with John in Mooste, Estonia in late 2005, a very welcome transitional time – several months to record, talk, collaborate and enjoy natural areas. The opening sound consists of bowed wires tensioned to large metal canisters, with objects (leaves? paper?) resting on the wires, rattling - the song of metal. Later, glass jugs slowly dragged in a circle inside an abandoned barn.
This is a piece of long crossfades, extended textures, a wordless dialogue. Taking pleasure in the small crackles and stochastic micro-events caused by patient interactions with physical objects. An attention to the resonance of materials and spaces, and a care to leave evidence of that in the sound. Layering and counterpoint of spaces and actions are the primary compositional tool, with long recordings left largely intact. I think this was the first project in which I felt comfortable working in a DAW - late night sessions at a residency in Turku, Finland with John. gyre wa
