Introducing the one and only, Matthew Higgs as our Beyond Trend Honoree! 🌟

Outside of being our longtime friend, Matthew is the Director and Chief Curator of White Columns Gallery in New York. Over more than two decades, Higgs included our artists in over twenty exhibitions across Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, and Berlin. Most recently, Higgs was the catalyst that sparked our partnership with SFMOMA.

This year’s Beyond Trend promises to be our most spectacular celebration yet, featuring over 100 stunning looks modeled by Creative Growth artists on the runway at Ciel Creative Space on May 30th,2026. The evening will showcase the extraordinary creativity and talent of our artists, demonstrating the truth Higgs recognized decades ago, that art at Creative Growth is “a tangible and life-affirming force.” 

We love you Matthew and can’t wait to celebrate you and alongside you!

Beyond Trend this year is so much more than a fashion show or a fundraiser.

It’s soundscapes by @felakutchii , drag guest star performances by @oaklashdrag , and a joyful presentation of 100 local artists who have designed and modeled their own looks. It’s a fashion and art pop-up shop, a living gallery of expression, and for VIP guests, a Grammy Award–winning performance by Fantastic Negrito with dinner curated by Bay Area All Stars.

It’s also an opportunity to celebrate alongside cultural icons like Kim Hastreiter, MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing), Jerry Saltz, and Matthew Higgs.

But at its core, Beyond Trend is about raising essential funds to support not only artists with disabilities, but the role of art in all our lives.

Opening Reception Tomorrow, May 8th: Home Show

Our annual Home Show transforms the gallery into a design showroom for artful living. This year’s exhibition features hand painted curtains, decorative pillows, a ceramic fountain, custom coffee table, looped rugs, woodcut wall sconces, wall textiles, and the small treasures that bring warmth and character to everyday spaces. Each piece is an original artwork that makes your home feel uniquely yours.

The Home Show includes solo installations by Pilar Aguilera and Lauren Dare.

Please join us tomorrow from 5–8pm at the Creative Growth Gallery.

In their conversation during OAF Talks + Performances, Sunny A. Smith (Executive Director, @creativegrowth) and Edward M. Gómez (Editor-in-chief, @brutjournal) pondered the global landscape of progressive studios. Tracing the history of the disability rights movement and the founding of the Katz family’s Bay Area studios in the 1970s, their dialogue shifted forward to the wider recognition disabled and neurodiverse artists have gained in the contemporary art world.

Opening Reception May 8th!

Meet Lawrence Choy 🏸 featured artist in the upcoming Home Show exhibition, May 8 - April 27

Drawn by the challenge of using racquets as a loom and frame, he began weaving ten colorful yarns through rackets, inventing his own approach with the help of Anne Meade, Creative Growth’s Fiber Art Facilitator.

Many of the rackets are donated by friends of Creative Growth gathered from rummage sales or pulled from personal collections.

For Lawrence, these pieces reminds him of learning to play tennis with his dad as a kid. He laughs thinking about how his father would chase down the balls while he practiced his swing.
