Making Merrie is a bilingual performance project inspired by mummers' plays and masked traditions of the Wales/England border. Each performance is an unrehearsed, nonsense tale of combat, death, and miraculous revival, featuring large wicker costumes crafted using traditional willow techniques. the project celebrates sustainable craftsmanship and evolving language as ways to connect more deeply with the land.

Hello! I'm announcing a call out for five UK basedbasketmakers to take part in -The Baskets Between Carnival and Lent', a @celfcymruarts funded project and exhibition at @oriel_myrddin (March–June 2027).

The project looks at all the baskets in the painting The Fight Between Carnival and Lent (1559) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, reimagining them through contemporary basketmaking, music, and performance. It asks how everyday objects like baskets can connect people, places, and histories?

The selected makers will work alongside invited makers Rachel Frost, Katy Bremer, Steen Madsen, Pau Trepat, and Flo Hamer (and me)

The call out is particularly aimed at emerging and developing basket makers who are interested in experimentation, interpretation, and learning as you go. You do not need to be a full-time basketmaker to apply.

Selected makers will receive £800 to produce two baskets for exhibition. Three places are reserved for Wales-based makers, with two open UK-wide.

Deadline for applications: 5 June 2026

Delighted to share that I’ve received @celfcymruarts funding for a new curatorial project, The Baskets Between Carnival and Lent.

The project brings together basketmakers from across Europe to remake every basket in Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Fight Between Carnival and Lent (1559). Shifting them from image into functional craft, music, and performance.

Developed for exhibition at @oriel_myrddin in 2027, in partnership with @heritagecrafts and @basketmakersassociation the project asks how baskets, which seem unimportant, are actually a unifying part of human life, and how through craft we might better understand each other across time and culture.

I’ll be announcing an open call for makers at the end of May. So keep an eye out.

On Friday 27th March we’re so thrilled to welcome Lewis Prosser🎤
March theme: LOCAL!

Lewis Prosser is an absurdist basketmaker, artist and curator based in Penarth. Using traditional craft techniques alongside performance, he explores regional identity, cultural exchange and public ceremony. His work employs humour and theatricality to trace relationships between objects, people and place, often through the creation of outlandish basketry forms.

In this CreativeMornings talk, he will demonstrate a few traditional weaving techniques while reflecting on his own journey into basketry. Like the process of making a basket, the talk will be an improvised, unpredictable dialogue between material and maker, exploring themes of craft access, sustainable making, and the importance of having fun.🧺🎨🖌️

This time last year - echoes of MAKING MERRIE, Ionawr/January 2025 - it was a huge delight to be invited by @clovisvosser AKA Lewis Prosser to go 'on the mum' in a big basket over at Mission Gallery, Swansea, and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, as a certain Vogum Gertlin, bwgan knight etc. See here pictures, scripts, and live illustrations.

Written and woven all by Lewis, MM draws heavily from the British folk tradition of a group of 'mummers' staging small scale plays in pubs, living rooms, village halls. Members of the community, dressing in weird n wonderful costumes, would portray archetypal characters (usually involving a killing, then a resurrection etc), before offering around a hat for some cash.

Folklore/practice, whilst seeing a resurgence in popular culture, can often feel locked away and gatekept by those who have a certain level of 'knowledge' (or even aesthetic) but without involving a raucous, inclusive community component, folklore dies. It is not something to be 'attained', it is there for all of us to plunder, for it is by definition our shared, communal histories of practicing faith, superstition, and mystery. Lewis' provocative and heartfelt work readdresses this through the gathering of audiences and people, and his generosity and commitment to craft prove that with him, his treatment of 'folk', whatever that may look like, is in safe hands.
