On this Endangered Species Day, we would like to highlight our rhino friends! 🦏🌍🩵

⭐️ Rhinos are a keystone species meaning their ecosystems depend on their survival- and yet they’re one of the most critically endangered species on Earth due to poaching.

🚁 How do we combat this? Dehorning. This process often looks dramatic and a little intense to an untrained eye, but it is one of the best tools (aside from political reform) to help deter poachers. Rhino horn is actually made of the same material as human fingernails- so you can think of dehorning as a very extra manicure. By trimming the rhino horn, poachers have nothing to sell.

Continuing our birthday month celebration… A message from our Founder:

“Wow… what a journey these past three years have been. I still can’t quite believe that something that started as a wild idea in my head, somewhere between South Africa and Dubai on a plane, has grown into what Wilde Tracks is today.

In such a short space of time, we’ve done things I never thought possible. We’ve supported hundreds of animal interventions, worked across four continents, stood alongside communities, helped empower women and children, and somehow found ourselves featured in TV productions and magazines like Vanity Fair, even picking up a TripAdvisor award along the way. It honestly gives me goosebumps thinking about what’s still to come.

But none of these exist without you.

To our incredible partners, thank you. You are some of the most dedicated, passionate people I have ever met, committing your lives to protecting wildlife and supporting communities on the ground. And to our guests, you are not just travellers. You are people choosing to show up, to care, and to be part of something bigger than yourselves. You are the reason this works.

To the Wilde Tracks team… I don’t even know where to start. The late nights, the weekends, the sacrifices, building this alongside full time jobs and life commitments. You’ve poured everything into this, and I’m endlessly grateful. You really are extraordinary.

A cut horn smells burnt, but it stinks of survival.

It’s surreal to watch in person. It’s surreal to see on a phone screen. And it’s even more surreal that we have to do this at all.

A rhino is the only thing on this earth that truly needs its horn. But if conservationists don’t remove it safely, poachers will take it brutally, often alongside the rhino’s final breath.

Rhino dehorning is not a tourism activity. It’s not an Instagram photo opportunity.

This is a wild and endangered animal being chased by a helicopter until the dart takes effect and fear replaces fight. It’s a chainsaw cutting through keratin, no different to our own nails and hair. Yet somehow, in this deeply messed up reality, it’s also survival. It’s a chance. It’s a statistic showing that, for now, this is helping.

We strive for a future where this is no longer necessary. Until then, @wildetracks will continue funding dehornings. We will continue bringing guests to witness this work with their own eyes, to understand the complexity of conservation, and to become advocates for why this necessary evil exists.

Conservation is not black and white. For every dehorning, I feel grief, pain and anger, but also hope. Hope for another year of life.

The drug cocktails have improved to reduce mental trauma. The procedure is painless, although still stressful. The horn grows back. But none of that changes the emotional reality of it. It feels wrong and right at the same time. It feels like fighting a battle that never truly ends.

But while the world searches for permanent solutions, we follow the science, we protect what we can, and we keep fighting for every extra day these animals get to live.
