Snapshot from the Kerlan: Barbara Bash has written and illustrated a number of children's books, including "Desert Giant: The World of the Saguaro Cactus," and "Shadows of Night: The Hidden World of a Little Brown Bat." The Kerlan Collection has recently received a new donation of Barbara's original process materials, including these (stunning!) watercolor illustrations.

This year’s outstanding student library employees all have the same thing common: what they love most about the Libraries is the people.
“It’s been one of the best, most welcoming workplace communities that I’ve been in, and I think that comes from the fact everybody here really wants to be here,” said Ryken Farr, a student assistant archivist at Andersen Library.
Since 1996, the Friends of the University of Minnesota Libraries’ awards committee has celebrated our student employees who exemplify excellence and make strong contributions to the Libraries. Read the full story at the link in bio.

For our final Magrath memories video, librarians Megan Kocher and Kristen Mastel remember a tradition both loved and loathed: the former grilled cheese station during Welcome Week at Magrath Library.
Since 1985, the Doris S. Kirschner Cookbook Collection has been a beloved and unique highlight of the Magrath Library experience. The collection contains more than 6,000 items including cookbooks, pamphlets, and recipes ranging in date from 1890-present.
As we prepare for Magrath Library’s closure on May 13, Megan Kocher, Science & Evidence Synthesis Librarian and curator of the Kirschner Cookbook Collection, reflects on what the space has meant to her over the years.

Study sustainability in Greece — without ever leaving the classroom! 🥽♻️
The experience is based on research by Carlson Associate Professor Necati Ertekin and @insead professors. VR headsets (provided by @umnlib) provided a lifelike, interactive experience that allowed undergraduate students in Supply Chain Planning & Control to follow the waste process on Tilos.
Through the LearnAI platform, students met the company founder from the case study, engaging in a video conference with him via a generative AI-powered avatar. Students were able to have unscripted conversations discussing behavioral strategies to increase public participation and financial approaches to sustaining the system.
“He answered like a person. He had facial expressions,” said Jeffrey Linzy, '27 BSB. “It almost did feel like I was having a conversation with him, and for the questions that I was asking him, he gave really thoughtful answers.”
🎥: INSEAD Immersive Learning, which developed the case study with AVRIS Technologies as the tech enabler.

For the last several years, Claudette has been Magrath Library’s unofficial mascot, greeting visitors and gently reminding them to return their books. So when Claudette offers to take you on one last tour of Magrath Library before it closes next week…you simply do not say no…
(She would also like to remind you that Magrath’s final day of service will be May 13. The extended study area on the basement level will remain accessible over the summer. Beginning May 14, the Natural Resources Library in Hodson Hall will open as the main St. Paul service point. See more at z.umn.edu/libmove.)
