There’s something really special about seeing Studio 102 taking shape on the Red Route. Not just another studio space, but somewhere that’s been built slowly and carefully by hand somewhere conversations, making and community will naturally happen.

Sonah is one of this year’s @upland_cic Emerge recipients, and it feels completely in keeping with @sonah_chaudhry_jewellery practice that the studio has come together in this way too: thoughtful, resourceful and deeply connected to people and place. Turning a shipping container into a creative space feels especially important at a time when affordable spaces for artists are becoming harder to find and hold onto.

Through Emerge, artists receive mentoring, financial support and a place within Spring Fling Open Studios creating a really meaningful bridge between developing a practice and opening that work up to the public. It’s support that invests in artists for the long term, helping people build sustainable creative lives here in Dumfries & Galloway.

And that’s what Spring Fling Open Studios is really about at its heart, people opening doors and inviting others into the reality of creative life. Not just finished pieces, but the tools, conversations, experiments and ideas behind them too.

There’s something very hopeful about Studio 102 and it feels like exactly the kind of place people will naturally gather around. We really can’t wait for people to experience it. Come say Hi 👋to Sonah on the Red Red Route this May!

Emerge recipients are mentored by professional experienced artists and makers over a six to nine month period, awarded a bursary of £1000 to create new work and take part in Spring Fling Open Studios. The programme also offers funding towards Go & See Trips, enabling the mentor and mentee to attend relevant events such as exhibitions, conferences, workshops or classes.

Led by ceramic artist @francesrossmakes, and supported by artists @claredawdry and @ruth_elizabeth_jones. Funded by the @holywoodtrust and @creativescots, the project gives children and young people the chance to experience the grounding properties of clay while supporting classroom learning and a sense of place in their home of Dumfries & Galloway.

CROWD is part of this year’s Spring Fling programme - it's work that invites interaction and participation.

Photographer Kim Ayres will be creating a scene full of people, but taking photos of each person individually. Participants will be asked to pose as though interacting with others in the room, even though they're on their own. But when the photos are edited together later, it will look like a crowded room full of activity.

All who take part will get a free digital copy of the final image.

Spring Fling artist Gail McGarva is creating a site responsive art trail called From Tree to Sea in the gorgeous gardens of Galloway House, which lead down to the beach at Rigg Bay in Garlieston.
She is placing three of her traditional fishing boats among ancient trees in the coastal gardens of the great house as a way of highlighting the link between the wood used to build them and the oceans they are designed to ply.
The final part of it, The Ghost Ship, will be like the skeletal remains of a boat. It’s a lament for all those wrecked and abandoned boats that line the coast of Scotland, gradually fading into the sea and disappearing from our world. See https://www.spring-fling.co.uk
