We’re pleased to welcome Alice Corile to Gray’s as our new Freelands Studio Fellow.

Alice’s work begins with quiet, in-between moments, where something slips, a word lands differently, a gesture doesn’t quite reach. She follows these traces through printing, layering and reworking, letting materials gently shift and hold onto what lingers.

Working primarily across textiles and print, her practice moves through memory, translation and the subtle marks we leave behind, on each other and in the spaces we share.

On joining Gray’s, Alice shares:
“Relocating to Aberdeen brings the opportunity to refocus my practice within a new community, a new country, and a new home.”

Over the next year, she’ll be part of the school, making work, sharing conversations, and settling into the rhythm of the studios alongside our students.

If you’re thinking about studying art, this is part of what makes Gray’s what it is. You’re not just learning in a studio. You’re learning alongside practising artists, within an active, evolving creative community.

Welcome to Gray’s, Alice ✨

A month and a bit at Gray’s School of Art as the Freelands Fellow
It’s been a crazy time so far learning new processes, making bad things and meeting lovely people
I keep forgetting that I live in Scotland now
Also:
- a call with my grandads
- the walk next to Gray’s along the river
- dog waiting for his owner

HALVED WALNUTS GIF

———

When I visit my Dziadek (Grandad) in Poland we sit and crack walnuts together. He can only say a few words in English, and my Polish is quite broken. We spend a lot of this time in silence.

He is a very practical man and can have quite a short fuse. Especially if you complete a task in a way that deviates from how he would do it. While sitting and unravelling walnuts from their shells I recently asked him ‘when are the times that you are patient?’
After a long pause and looking at me like I had lost my mind, he barked back ‘I’m always patient’.

This GIF flicks through prints we made last summer, coating halves of walnuts in paint and pressing them onto paper. Getting him to do this was an interesting task. At first he found the process absurd and pointless (fair enough), but slowly started to get into a rhythm. He even sawed a couple walnuts in two to make printing with them easier.

This silly task was a good excuse to spend quality time together. It’s an odd thing being preprogrammed to love someone. How even without access to most words you can relate/ identify with their gestures. We have sat and laughed together, sat and cried together, sat and cracked walnuts together. All while not knowing but kind of knowing what the other is trying to say.

There’s no sound in this moving image. These two brain-like blobs appear to be talking, listening, miming. Sometimes talking over each other. It’s stilted and a little awkward looking.

Some things I’ve been up to (recently and not so recently)

1. My space almost ready for open studios @theislandbristol
2. Crochet curtain up close
3. Printing without a drying rack
4. A section of Jo’s curry recipe
5. Stretching a screen and burning my sinuses with glue fumes
6. Drawings my grandad and I did of each other’s descriptions of a spider. ‘Why are you so scared? They only have four legs’
7. More open studios prep
8. Tubs on holiday reading book
9. Hamma beads test for a crochet pattern
10. Creep on the roof

Excited to be part of This and Other Worldly Glimpse group show! I’ll be showing work from last year alongside 19 other artists:)
I’m currently in Poland so won’t be able to make the private view (pics are attached from a small solo trip to Rzeszów)
Go say hi and have a look if you are in London tomorrow!
