The Bebopper’s Guide to the Galaxy is the latest and most free-wheeling statement by Gary Topper and Symmetry, an ensemble deemed by its fearless blend of jazz, rock, funk, reggae and Latin influences. The album’s title is a parody of the sci-- books that inspired Gary’s compositions; stories known for their humor with a jaundiced eye cast toward life on earth.

Gary Topper is a veteran woodwind player, arranger/composer whose career spans performances with legendary artists, Grammy-winning recordings, and contributions to major lm soundtracks. His writing on this LP is ring on all cylinders, exploding with a mix of adventurous harmonies, rhythmic twists and rich landscapes for improvisation. All delivered by a tight 6 piece horn section riding inside the groove of Symmetry’s masterful rhythm section.

The first five tracks on the album are a suite directly referencing the sci-- stories that informed Gary’s writing. On Side A is “Hyperspace Detour”, “We Apologize for the Inconvenience”, “Flying Over Islington” and “Z’s Revenge”. The opening track “Hyperspace Detour” is a rollicking trip through a musical galaxy punctuated by riveting solos and intricate ensemble passages which sets the adventurous tone for the rest of the tracks.

The opening track on Side B finishes out the Bebopper’s Suite with “Don’t Panic” a song that moves between high tension and sudden release, featuring burning guitar and synthesizer solos. We return to earth for the last two songs with “Medicine Man” and “Marley’s Dream”. “Medicine Man” is a musical portrait of a masterful shaman in the wild and “Marley’s Dream”, a reggae influenced journey through layers of fantasy, trial and tranquility.

The Bebopper’s Guide to the Galaxy is edgy yet accessible. Its playfulness and sophistication create a compelling and exhilarating listening experience. For longtime fans and new listeners alike, this LP offers a compelling glimpse into the evolving artistry of one of Memphis’ most distinctive musical voices.

On May 13th, Select-O-Hits lost a good friend with the passing of soul and blues legend Clarence Carter. His songs such as “Slip Away,” “Patches,” and perhaps the greatest line-dance song ever, “Strokin’,” are true classics that will live on for generations. Clarence was kind enough to perform at our 30th Anniversary celebration in 1990, a memory we will always cherish. His voice will be deeply missed.
