β οΈ Weβre expecting another busy weekend in our Emergency Department - as always we prioritise serious injuries and life threatening emergencies. If your illness or injury is less urgent you will be waiting longer, and we may redirect you to another service.
If you need help for a non life-threatening injury it could be quicker and more convenient to visit a Minor Injury Unit (MIU).
π₯ MIUs are staffed by an experienced team who are able to assess and treat a range of injuries from sprains and simple fractures to wounds and bites.
π₯ Thereβs no need to book an appointment - just turn up during their opening hours.
If youβre not sure if an MIU is right for your injury, contact NHS 111.

There are lots of things you can do to help make visiting someone in hospital safe and enjoyable π
If you are unable to visit because you're feeling unwell, our Family Liaison Facilitators can help you keep in touch. Search 'RUH Family Liaison Facilitators' to find out more on our website. π²
If you have a cough, cold, diarrhoea, vomiting or any other infectious condition, it's really important to stay home and delay your visit until 48 hours after your symptoms stop. Norovirus is currently circulating and can spread very easily.
Thank you for helping us to protect our patients and community.

If a friend or family member is getting ready to be discharged from hospital, there are simple, practical ways you can help get them back to the comfort of their own home as soon as possible. π
β
Ensure their home is comfortable and tidy ready for when they return. Remove trip hazards, clean any dirty dishes and throw away mouldy food.
β
Pick up any prescriptions and make sure they have healthy food and drinks ready.
β
Check they have essentials like keys and a working phone so they can get follow-up care or ask for help if needed.
β
Arrange transport home from hospital and make sure they have weather-appropriate clothes and shoes for the journey.
β
Know who to contact for help at home. In BANES this includes the Community Wellbeing Hub who can connect you with local organisations who can provide support.
We know people prefer the comfort of their own home, and recover faster there following a stay in hospital. Help us ensure a smooth and safe return home for our patients. π

Congratulations to our Maternity Vaccination team, who've been presented with our Working Together Award to recognise their impressive work in increasing vaccination uptake. π
Their dedication has seen record numbers of pregnant women and birthing people choosing to have the flu, RSV and pertussis vaccines.
Their nomination praises the team for putting listening at the heart of what they do. They have used feedback from families and colleagues to design a successful process that makes it easier for people to get vaccinated and reduces anxiety.

The sun is acting feral this week π₯΅
With an amber heat-health alert in place for the South West until 5pm on Thursday 28 May, it's important to remember these simple ways to keep yourself and others safe, no matter which generation you are from:
β
Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains that face the sun.
β
If you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly.
β
Drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake.
β
Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell.
β
Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and what to do if you or someone else has them.
Stay safe, besties π

π 25 years of supporting babies and families through the Community Neonatal Outreach Service πΆπ
The team supports babies who have spent time in our neonatal unit, helping families as they transition from hospital to home. From feeding and nursing care to emotional and practical support, theyβve helped thousands of families over the years.
The service now supports around 90 families each year, offering more care at home than ever before β including support with feeding tubes to help babies return home sooner.
Cath Ould, who has been part of the service since it began, said: βItβs a great job, so rewarding and Iβm very proud of the work we do. We aim to act as a bridge between hospital and home for those babies who have had to have a bit of extra care in our neonatal unit.β
Families say the care makes a lasting difference. Maria Kelleher, who was at the party with daughter Alisha, said: βThey are so much more than a service to us, theyβve become like family, and we will always be grateful for everything theyβve done.β
Thank you to our Neonatal Outreach team for your dedication, compassion and the vital support you provide every day. π

We're expecting hot weather over the weekend and into next week. Anyone can become unwell when the weather is hot, so here are some tips for keeping well and cool.
π₯ Try to keep out of direct sun, especially during the hottest part of the day from 11am β 3pm.
πIf you're going out in the sun, walk in the shade when you can. Get ready by applying sunscreen and wearing a hat, sunglasses and light, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes.
π Regularly apply sunscreen (it should be at least SPF 30 and have a 4 or 5 star UVA protection, which will be marked on the bottle).
π₯ Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid excess alcohol
πββοΈ Avoid extreme physical exertion. If you can't, try to keep it for the cooler parts of the day such as the morning or evening.
π΄ Check in on older friends, family and neighbours, particularly those who live alone, who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated during the hot weather
